1987 kx 80

i have an 87 kx 80. the rear brake locks up and wont release until i stop and push the bike backwards a few inches.
i have tried new brake pads, that worked for a very short time. i cleaned the drum out, this also worked for a very limited time.
any suggestions?

It sounds like the return springs in the drum are worn out. Another possibility is the brake linkage is binding, causing the brakes to drag.

this particular bike has a cable that operates the rear brake. all parts are new, except the drum.

im afraid the tolerances may be too great.
