1988 Xr250 Oil leak

My 1988 Xr250 leaks oil out of the counter sproket b/c it needs a new seal somewhere in the wngine, but i was wondering if automotive gasket sealer could close up the leak? Is it bad to use? Also my odometer doesnt work b/c the cable is damaged. Can i put a new cable on or do i need a whole new guage and everything?

On that bike you need to do a complete tear down, and split the cases. The counter shaft seal is installed from the inside. I have seen numerous leaks after rebuilds, as it is easy to catch the seal with the shaft.

Speedometer cables can be replaced seperately from the odo unit.
