1994 CR125 rear wheel issues

Dad's got a 1994 CR125 with a crack in the rear wheel. He got an excel rim for like $60.00 to replace it, but discovered that the old spoke nipples won't wonrk - they're too big for the holes in the rim.

Excel nipples and spokes will be about $100+shipping. Is there another solution?

Any ideas?

Dad's considering machining the OD of the original spoke nipples so they fit in the holes . . .

Is this a good idea? Will it work?
