Looking at trying to make my 1996 KDX 200 Street Legal, has anyone had any sucess in Michigan trying to do this? Before I buy all the parts to make this happen I would like to know if it is possible. Not looking as using it for transportation just to get from trail to trail and not be bothered by the authorities!

Very easy to do.

All you need is a brake pressure switch that you replace the rear master cylinder Banjo bolt with. Wire that to the tailight. Your KDX probably already has a dual filament bulb for the brake/running light. The pressure switch you can order thru mose bike shops. If you cant find one at the shop try www.electrexusa.com

Then you need a mirror. A $15 Acerbis Mirror will do the trick.

Some DOT tires. Kenda has some that you can get cheep at www.rockymountainmc.com for about $75 a pair.

A horn. Just a squeeky bulb type bycycle horn will get ya by there.

You are supposed to have a high/low bean headlight. But U can usually get away without that one.

Thats about it.

Freddette Racing sells all the stuff that you will need also. They have a neet thingy that will allow your headlight to be a high/low too.

You go to the SOS and ask for the Green inspection form to get a dirtbike street titled. Once you have that you go home and call 911 and tell them that you need an oficer to come out to your house for a motorcycle inspection. He will look it over and sign off on the form. Then its back to the SOS for title and plates. Make sure you have insurance when doing this. Try www.bike-line.com for DIRT CHEEP insurance. If you just want barely legal PLPD then that is the place for a street legal dirtbike. Dont bother going there for a street bike.

Also if you know someone that is an officer have them insoect it. Goes much better that way.

YZMAN has got it down... I just want to add that I know Peacock LTD does it for $200 (does not include the tires). Drop the bike off and pick it up legalized...
Of course it is cheaper to do it yourself but some people dont want to fool with it (right CW??)...

I've taken mine to the local cop shop instead of calling 911 (never felt right to do that).

I know what you mean. But when I called the local cop shop direct they told me to call 911 and they would take care of it. Go figure.

Do a search in the kdx forum for how to wire up the brake light switch . I put a new lighting coil in mine because the stock coil doesnt put out enough power. However I think I read about a work around in the kdx forum. Here in illinois when I transfered the title, I just applied for a plate and they gave me one. The Original title was from Missouri and it didnt state that it was off road only.

If you want to use the stock lighting coil on a kdx you just usethe single element light that comes on thekdx from factory. Then you put a resistor in the harness that feeds the stock bulb and it makes it a little dimmer. Then you wire a new circuit from the input side of the resistor to the brake switch and then from the switch back up to the output side of the resistor.. Now when you close the switch - well looky dat henry, we got break lights :yikes:
Pretty simple really....

Oh yea, I am pretty good with this electronic stuff but you ask meto find the way out of the woods up by Boon and you better have an Emergency Kit with you (available at most bike shops North of US10 now!!!!).

After my last post I went to seach the kdx forum and there it was about the resistor and the switch. I wish I would have looked there before I bought the jGear kit from rocky mountain. :(

Hey Jayv70,

Now I know that there are two unplated KDX's in MI. I've had the brake switch and a wiring harness with a resistor wired in for a year. It is top on my list here this spring. Let us know how it goes and I'll do the same.

Thanks,

I called the township police department about scheduling an appointment to inspect my bike, and they also told me to call 911. Glad to see the police department's priorities were in-line with mine...

8 minutes later I had a officer in my driveway. 1 minute and 19 seconds later I had a signed form. It was the several hours and 3 separate trips to the Secretary of State that was the real challenge! :bang:

Hopefully your experience will be better. I was working in downtown Detroit at the time, so used an inner-city branch. They were not, let's say, "well-versed" in the steps involved in converting ORV titles to street-legal titles. I was eventually passed on to the branch manager, who had to call the SoS hotline in Lansing a few times for help. After more than an hour of waiting, and with an expired meter begging for $30 ticket, I "rescheduled" for another meeting with the branch manager after she had a chance to figured it all out.

Other steps involved with the SoS...

1) Bring in signed green form to get title converted.
2) Need converted / street legal title (I think a temp will do) and insurance to get a plate.
3) Need street legal, plated bike, and insurance in order to take the road test for the cycle endorsement.
4) Back to SoS with your certificate for passing road test to get endorsement on your license.

Then it's time to ride, Clyde! :ride:

Thanks for the information, thankfully I do not have to deal with the inter city type offices, although seeing as it is a State job there is a lot of not so well versed people working at the SOS.

Only have to deal with the first two steps, already have the endorsement.

I seem to remember hearing some telling me that they need to do the title thingy offline. Sometimes this Dirtbike conversion confuses the folk behind the counter as they look at there computer and scratch there head cause "there aint no button here for that". Tell them that you think its an offline process. That may set them on the right track.

Don't feel bad about SOS problems in Michigan. It's not much different in Illinois. Went to renew my drivers license yesterday and had nothing but trouble. Took two written tests, one road test in the van, signed my name 18 times and left with a plain license and a learners permit for a motorcycle.

I cant believe They gave you a learners permit :| ,Thats an insult. those people at the ss are some of the most unpleasent people I have ever met. But maybe thats because I wasnt holding out any money for a bribe. ( Im sure you know all about the licenses for bribes scandle.)

Whatever you do, don't tell the SOS people that you are wanting to "make a motorcycle street legal". By their definition, a motorcycle is street legal. Refer to your KDX as a two wheeled ORV or a dirt bike. If you don't, it will cause all kinds of confusion...........kind of like ordering a Whopper Junior with no mayo on a Sunday evening at Burger King!

Oh, and if you have to take the "cone test" in the SOS parking lot to get your endorsement, don't RIDE your bike up the ramp and into the truck when you're done!

Here's a :bang: for ya.... Why is it that the SOS is about the only business left on earth that does not take a credit card?

Hell, I can buy a $3.89 Whopper Junior with no mayo on a Sunday evening at Burger King with a Visa, but I can't pay $157.22 in SOS fees with a card!!! I rarely carry much cash, and never a checkbook. More than once I've picked a number, waited in line, only to have my CC denied at the counter!

And on the cone course, I did a little stoppie on the "braking" test. First time the testing gal saw that. Asphalt grips much better than sand! :)

SOS "road test"

for those that have taken the cone test -do you have to have a fullly street legal bike to take the riding portion of the test? IU know when a 16 yo takes a road test they go over the car with a fine tooth comb but I didn't know what the deal is with a "cone test"

Yes, you have to have a street-legal bike to take the road test. I did it in a church parking lot with cones.

The lady who tested me even checked that I had a working brake light. It needs to work with both the rear brake and front brake levers. I just have a hydraulic switch on the rear, so when she said, "OK, now apply the front brake", I pulled in the front brake lever while simultaneously depressing the rear brake lever. "Yep, front brake light works"... :coocoo:

I rented the bike I used from the guy doing the test. Also installed a brake light switch on my KDX, wired to rear light which I replaced with an LED.
