I've got a buddy that was in the market for a 200cc enduro bike. he has his eye on a 2003 KTM 200 EXC but found a Gas Gas 125 XC demo at a steal of a price.

Can anybody out there give me there opition on this bike. I have heard great things about the 200 and above GG's but nothing about the 125. Mainly concerned about the motor. Both reliability and ridability.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

I rode a newer model, '03 ec125 and really liked it (and that says alot because I prefer a big bore 2 stroke or a 4 stroke). It felt really light and the suspension was set up well for woods. For a 125 it had good bottom end and was very ridable. I was surprised I liked it, because all my other riding buddies ride small bore two strokes now - and I don't like 'em in the woods (one friend has a rm125 and the other has a yz125).

In terms of reliability, I haven't heard of any issues with the motor. They used a yamaha yz125 as the basis for the engine design. Pistons, pv valves, and clutch plates off of a yz125 fit. I have also heard that the yz125 pipe fits on the gasgas.

I guess if yamaha made a wr125 - the gasgas 125 would be very similar (except ohlins shock, nickel perimeter frame, six speed wide ratio tranny, 18" rear wheel...)

Coach-

I have owned a 2001 GasGas 200 EC for two years and love the bike. I know that the 125 is a different motorcycle, but I was fortunate enough to ride one back to back with my 200. The 125 had a little less low end and midrange punch, but it felt pretty quick for a 125. I would probably shy away from a 125 if I weighed more than 180 or so. I would say that it felt like a Jap 125 MX bike with a heavier flywheel. The 125 I rode also felt a little lighter than my 200. The bikes are very flickable and still have good stability. The GG reminds me more of a Japanese bike than a KTM (like Jeff said). I have a KTM now and am selling my GG, but next year I am going to consider a GG again. The parts are really easily available now and also are more reasonably priced than a couple years ago.

:) Hope that helps. I know you won't be dissapointed.

Get the GG, I have a 02 GG125 it has plenty of power. The bike is easy to start.I ride mostly woods and its fun to ride in the nasty stuff. First gear takes a little getting used to. First is geared tall so you can really
get on the gas starting or coming out of a corner.GG and KTM both make great bikes. Smackover has a demo for sale too.

Coach,

Have him talk to Jason Gerken at the Awards banquet this weekend. He raced a GG125 most of the season. I rode it and it was a fun bike. A RM125 is the only other 125 I've only ridden, so I can't really compare besides the obvious that it has less torque than a KTM200.
