Hi all. I found a decent deal on a '96 300 EXC on e b a y. I am wondering what the differneces are on this older generation. I've ridden '98-up 200-300 EXC's and really like them(currently ride a KDX), and have never ridden a 97-older. Mainly what are the differences in the powerplant? The newer motors are really nice. Can lug them down to almost nothing for hours and still crack them open w/o fouling(like my KDX can). Any input on this 93-97 generation, and how they are different from current is greatly appreciated!! Thanks guys...

I had a '96 300 exc. It seemed to have less vibration than a buddy's '98. My '96 also had definite hit compared to the '98 but maybe because I ran the '96 with an FMF spark arrestor (not stock).

I have a 96 SX 250 and some differences in that generation are:

* TWC powervalve (prone to rattle but easy to service)
* Conventional Zokes up front (one leg compression one leg rebound)
* Ohlins shock w/ linkage

I can't speak to the 300 but my 250 fouled plugs all the time with the previous owner. No problems after I rejetted. I use Motul 800 @ 40:1. I have yet to foul a plug while riding at pace.

Thanks for the input guys....How do you like the suspention compared to the "linkless" newer era? Or compared to other bikes you've ridden.

I also run Motul 800----GREAT stuff!
