I hope Nephron is right with "any publicity is good publicity". Unfortunately, David Bailey, no matter how eloquent a speaker he may be, still sits across from the reporter paralyzed. :(

I can't say it will definately prevent it from happening, but he is the primary reason I wear the AP Backguard spine protector along with my chest protector AND neck guard. I love riding my dirtbike and want to continue riding it! :)

It was with the ATV's where 20/20 modified the chassis of the 3-wheeler to make it more unstable going through the rolling whoops they had set up. They also ignored the riding tips in the manual and did not show the manufacturers recommendations.

Not sure on the f-150 but I know that with the ATV's they were sued and lost. They never did a full retraction and the fact that they lied has been covered up over the years.

60 minutes is no different.

I was a Journalism major for a couple years and I can tell you that yellow journalism has been around forever. 60 minutes is not the only one, neither is 20/20. They all do it.

Back to a question in another post--does anyone really have the data? 60 minutes better have it, if they plan on slamming the sport. I'm not convinced yet that there are a number more injuries now than before--maybe I'll check medline, or an epidemiology site out.

I'd be willing to bet there's a hell of a lot more total and incident injuries in mx than sx (a la Pastrana)--not like that matters, but they'll focus on the SX jumps tonight, etc. Pastrana gets stuck in a rut, or rolls a table and causes more damage to himself than when he's doing backflips. And the point I'm trying to make there, is that these types of frequent and freak injuries are many more times common in (yes) more common activities--like skiing.

Who has the shortest life expectancy from the point of employment onward....a motocrosser, ski racer, spray pilot or crab fishermen?

Yeah, they'll push the hippocracy hard tonight--but it won't ruin a large-scale sport like MX/SX. With three wheelers, there was an option & Barstow went down because of the greenies, eh? But there's still Best in the Desert, BAJA, you name it....there are viable options--even Q U A D S.

I'm going to do some research before tonight, just to see how much they pull out of their arses.

I doubt that 60 minutes will be the beginning of the end of the sport, however i do think that any form of cycling is viewed by many as a daredevil type activity and the 60 minutes show will only reinforce those views.

Any extreme activity has extreme consequences but what most dont realize is that the rewards can be extreme as well, why else would anybody climb on the back of an 1800 lb bull for any amount of time? I'll take my chances on the triples!

It's all in how they present the information. I picked up a new 4 Wheeling magazine yesterday and there was a short mention about the safety of ATV's. It did not mention whether two-wheel dirtbikes were classified as ATV's, but it stated that ATV injuries rose 104% in the past year. That sounds like a startling figure, but then the editor mentioned that ATV sales rose something like 124%. So in essence, a smaller percentage of people actually got hurt when you consider the dramatic increase in sales. Let's just hope 60 minutes presents all the facts.

Yea maybe we can get rid of them dangerous bicycles..... Maybe we can get the goverment to ban them....... Its definately a result of the bicycle and has nothing to do w/the operators knowledge of the dangers associated with the hobby. That would require the government thinking we have an ability to make an educated decision on the risks we VOLUNTEERLY take..... :silly: :laugh:

Hmmm, not sure you got my point;

nephron, your right a negitive broadcast won't have any effect on a large scale event and the thousands that engage in these events probably arn't paying any attention to this, but the tens of thousands that don't engage in large scale event are worried, so is the AMA and many others

Here , something else to think about;

you have a 60 minute show , 40% is commercial, Mike Wallace is doing a piece on the Reagans, Dan Rather is doing a piece on the Firefighters who are also arsonist, how much time do you think Jim Stewart will get to do a balanced and promotive segment on motorcycle racing when the lead off is freestyle and the focus is on injuries

Ok, I’m going to get off the 60 minute II thing for a second, only because this is exactly the kind of Bull**** we just dodged.

A young girl (15) drowned while waterskiing and now the parent are filing a class action law suit against 15 different boat manufactures

Here's the deal, she and 3 other friends were being towed behind the boat while hanging onto the swim step and the carbon monoxide knocked her out and she drowned almost instantly.

Now for all of us who are familiar with water skiing the last place you want to be for any length of time is at the back of any ski boat when the engine is running, any body with half a brain would not have the engine running with people anywhere near the swim step. (This is a Master Craft, direct drive), but this is the case and it is the fault of the manufacture and 15 other that this tragedy has happened; Oh and guess who is spear heading the investigation, Yep CBS and they are blaming the manufactures also because there is no label saying that it’s unsafe to stick your head inches away from the exhaust of a lugging V8 not to mention a prop that will turn you into chum in a heart beat

This is a bunch of crap and typical media BS, the law suit hasn’t even been filed yet and CBS just condemned Master Craft and 14 other manufacturers

They want to blame someone, blame the operator
