'98 KTM 250EXC Kickstarter Return Spring

I helped a buddy replace the kickstarter pawl and spring as they'd worn past the point of engaging the pawl into the gear any longer. Dealer made it sound pretty common.

Now it's all put back together, and the kickstarter won't spring back to the top like it used to. It springs just fine prior to replacing the case top. Then when I torque the case bolts, it quits springing.

Any ideas or solutions or additional knowledge would be appreciated........Thanks............ :bang:

As I recall, Rainman, you mostly stood around in your shiny new boots & asked why we weren't reading the manual, and occasionally swiped my ratchet & 8mm socket. :moon:

Anyone know what the heck it could be? I'm thinking somehow the shaft isn't seating all the way into the case....?
