I resently started racing a few motocross races here in the last few months. I have always heard of people getting into horrible wrecks and getting hurt. I have heard of things like this happening, but I have never seen it first hand. That is until this past weekend. I started racing in the reads racing club in Northern Indiana, and this weekend they were racing at a place called Hangtime MX park in N. Manchester, IN. I got there at 4:30 pm and did not leave until 11:30 pm. In the time I was there to the time I left 10 people were carted off the track. 2 of them left in an EMS. I have never seen that many people get hurt at one race in my 20 years of being on this earth.
Now here is the real kicker, I raced on Saturday night, they had races on Sunday. My Boss went to the races on Sunday, He was not sure on the exact amount, but a few more people got hurt. One of wich had to be air lifted to the hospital, and is still out cold from it. The doctors said that he may be that way for a few more days.
And on that note I will state this, I AM GOING TO STAY WERE I BELONG, IN THE WOODS.
Now my question is this, have any of you ever seen anything like that before. I would just like to know if this is a normal thing to happen every once in a while or was this the work of bad mojo?

My club held its first race this year. We had 3-4 people crash and looked at by the EMS guys. One or two had to go to the hospital but that was it. Crashes happen but we try to minimize it by making a safe track (no do or die jumps) and stressing that people ride within their ability.

If you're looking for a sport that's considered safe, I don't think you picked the right one. There's always a risk of injury.

There will always be crashes but like Speedy said, if you build the track a little more forgiving, that will help minimize the carnaige.

Our local track is very hard pack black dirt and very fast yet we don't have that many injuries. The main reason is that there is only one gapped double and that's not really built to be that way. It's a triple double triple where the real fast guys jump the gap between the 2nd & 3rd jump. If you come up short it's still forgiving. That's not to say people don't get hurt, only that it's not designed to drag the frame on the peaks of the jumps.

I'm sticking with the woods too. And, sometimes just my driveway when I get that really hinky feeling. :)

oh oh, sorry P-man, I didn't mean your "TRUCK" payment. :p

It is Akira's "TRUCK" payment. It is a S-10 Chevy "TRUCK". You know, for a small "TRUCK", it gets great gas mileage. Too, the bed on his "TRUCK" will hold a dirt bike. Not bad for a little "TRUCK".

I DO NOT blame you! I love the woods, any day, over an MX track!!!

I'm with you there! I've only ever spent about a teeny fraction of my dirtbike time circulating an MX track. But that tiny amount of time was enough to cost me an ACL.

I've been on dirtbikes since I was 15 and in that time I have seen and heard of far more accidents on MX tracks than in off road events.

Which is not to say that off-road is risk free, I know people who've gotten serious injuries in hare scrambles and enduro events. I know people that have gotten serious injuries trail riding. In my experience the trees are safer by leaps and bounds than a track is. I've been to enduros where the most serious thing that the EMS crew looked at was dirt in a riders eye. Out here an enduro means 60+ ground miles, 5+ hours and somewhere in the vicinity of 150 to 400 riders. Heck the last enduro we rode the only person to get transported by EMS was due to a bee sting, not a crash.

IMHO Modern MX tracks a just way too dangerous for those who have to go back to work on Monday. The peak to peak double is super dangerous. Any one who has been around the sport for any length of time can rattle off a list of famous riders who have suffered serious or career ending injuries on jumps ( David Baily, Danny "Magoo" Chandler, Travis Pastrana, etc. ). There are certainly large numbers of weekend warriors who have fallen victim to those same crippling man made jumps. The risk is just too high. I'll stay in the trees until sane natural terrain tracks come back into vogue.

Trees Win!

I've been contemplating the wood conversion from mx as I don't bounce like I used to. I can live without the huge jumps, but blasting out of berms is my biggest hurdle. Yeah, I know I can still do that on a woods bike but it's not the same......."I'm so confused"
