After a long 20 years I am just now starting to get back into trials. Boy have there been changes !!!
My question is about boots for trials riding. Are "trials specfic" boots (Alpine Stars or Garene)really required for mobility on the bike ? Or will a standard MX boot be just as good ?
The reason I am asking such a basic question is that I am still in the recovery stage from a non motorcycle accident of last summer. One of the injuries being a crushed knee and femuer. So boots and such are of paticular interest to me. Hopefully I will be able to start riding before the year is out. But in the meantime, getting prepped for the big day.
If "trials specfic" boots are really required then that is the route I`ll take.
Safety first.......

I dropped my shin on a rock yesterday. Apart from a bruise the Tech 8's stopped it being a lot more serious. The protection and padding across the boot probably stopped a much worse outcome. Hey, I think I'll go and re enact the spill without the boots to see if the outcome was different ! (NOT)

Does that count for whether when riding trails the more protection the better.

Good luck with recovery hope you get some good replies to convince you.

I guess it depends on your riding level. At a recent Trials school I attended they told us center the peg between your arch and the ball of your foot and when you need traction you drop you heels (among other things). Anyway if you are fairly advanced, you need fairly flexible boots (at least in the ankle). Hope this helps. Welcome back!! :thumb:

JPE, I can tell you, at least as a fairly novice trials rider, that trials specific boots make a HUGE difference. MX boots are simply too stiff and restrictive to give you the level of feel you need for those "delicate" little trials controls. I tried to use my MX boots, but it was like dancing in skiboots. Be sure to wear some type of knee/shin pad to protect those legs. Trials boots tend to be shorter than MX boots too.

I'm with JTT, the trials spec boots make feeling the bike through the pegs A LOT better than with my Tech 8's.

The other advantage is that the sole is non-slip, so if you dab then they don't tend to slide forwards like a MX boot. I broke a couple of little bones in my foot using MX boots and taking a dab on a slippery down hill - I nearly twisted my foot off (or thats what it felt like!). They're also more comfortable when walking around the sections too :)
