Buddy had an accident while riding on last Sunday.
He's got broken collarbone and 2 (or 3) fracture ribs. :whiner:
He stayed in a hospital for 2 nights and just got home yesterday afternoon.

Do you have any suggestion about what he should do to ease his pain (besides pain medication) and recover faster?

Firelily, sorry to hear about Buddy's injuries!

Wish I could give you some helpful hints but from my experience there isn't much you can do for either ribs or collarbones. My physical therapist & I were discussing cracked ribs the other day and he didn't have any solutions either - he had bruised his awhile back & we were bemoaning the fact that there really isn't much you can do. If I remember right collarbones are about the same way. Immobilize both & wait for it to heal!

Maybe a bodycast?

For the ribs try some form of compression, either a giant elastic wrap or a spandex compression shirt. Might be a real booger to get on with the collar bone issue though.

Mini,
That's too bad about Buddy! Best wishes to him for a complete and speedy recovery.

Does his Dr. have him in a 'Figure 8' brace for the collarbone, or is he in a sling? If he is not in a Figure 8, see if his Dr.'s will let him have one, as that allows him to have some use of both hands.

IMO, the best way to heal fast is to avoid re-injury. It is so easy to have a painful setback by over-exerting when he starts to feel better. It's extremely frustrating to reduce your activity for a few months, but it is even worse to be in pain for six+ months because you can't wait to get back to normal.

Buddy, get well soon!! I'm sure Mini will look after you very well.

You'll find a chair (Lazyboy) more comfortable than a bed for a while.

Wear the sling or figure 8 all the time.

Don't cough, laugh or make quick moves.

Do not sneeze under any circumstances.

Now, on to more important things - how's the bike?

Thank you, all!
The hospital he was carried in by ambulance wasn't too helpful. They gave Buddy pain medication in ER, but it wasn't really working for few hours. It also took at least 5 hours before they took X-rays in ER. So of course, they didn't give us anything but sling when we left the hospital.

I went to get "Figure 8 brace" at a medical supply store today. He thinks it is more comfortable than sling. And the lady at the store said with this brace the broken collarbone will heal in proper position. ;)
He is going to see his regular doctor on Friday. So hopefully he can get better idea about his recovery.

Kiwi, Buddy did sneeze last night and then moaned! Surprisingly his bike has no major damage.....but his helmet is cracked!

PS: bbbom and Patman, I was in Tony & Laura's trial school when Buddy got hurt. I loved riding trial bike so much that I decided to get a trial bike!

Get well soon Buddy. I have decapacitated knee from surgery and rental movies are getting old and boring already. On the positive side, I will not have tire and bike wear to deal with for a while.

Does this mean you'll be able to ride two days in a row at Elkins from now on? What did you have done?

Buddy is doing much better today on the 5th day after the accident. He could even shave! What a difference that makes. ;)

Les, you and Buddy have to compete in the recovery race!
Buddy said "This injury put a dent on in my riding carrier!". But I'm just happy that he is alive and the injury will heal eventually.
I haven't washed my Pampera yet, so as soon as I wash it I will take a picture and show it to you.

Brian, yes, I will bring Buddy's bike for you only if you let us use your "Meadow Castle"! :)

I'm sure we could work something out. Now Buddy has plenty of time to get your trailer outfitted just right ;)
