Building my first dirtbike jump. Any tips?

Im planing on fixing up an old worn down little jump at a riding spot close to my house which isnt that great but is the closest place i can go. I havent got much experience jumping dirtbikes but i have done acouple jumps but i do have experience dirtjumping on mountain bike. The jump thats there right now is all worn down and is about 3 ft wide a foot or two high and 5-6ft table. Right now im planning on increasing everything. Making it 4ft wide, 3ft high,6-8ft table and making the jump and landing faces bigger. I dont have any tractors or anything and will be building the old fashion way with a shovel :bang: Does anyone have any problems with the size of this jump for a unexperienced jumper like me? I dont have any problems trying it and crashing its part of learning. Any tips on building the jump? Im planning on using a buncha filler like logs and rocks then covering it all with dirt. But what is a good method to pack the dirt so when i use the jump i dont crush it? Any help would be great.

Make the jump face extend 1.75 to 2 times the height for novice jumps (so about 6 feet of face in the case of your 3 feet high jump). Otherwise what you're doing sounds fine. Depending on how much distance you have to take a run at it, 8 feet of length will probably not be enough, even with just a 3 foot face.

I recently built a small track last summer, but we were fortunate enough to have a loader to help. The problem with using a shovel is that it's hard to get everything packed well, and the jumps wear out much quicker with loose dirt. And by packed I mean the kind of packing that occurs when you ride a 1 ton machine over it.

Do you have a riding lawnmover? If so make the landing roll enough that you can ride on onto the top (for a smoother landing even if you come up short) And use the the mover to pack everything down.

make the lip small for a beginner and make the jump stretched out not straight up and a shovel is gunna be like using a spoon in a sand box unledd your jump is already packed down pretty well

Well there is already a solid jump there right now that im planning on building ontop of but obviously its not going to be that great using shovels but hey its better then no jump at all. I will post back when im done with some pictures.

Just don't make the face too steep, or you'll be wanting to endo every time.

My and my buddy started off much like you. We were all into BMX and had a good dozen or so jumps around. Then dirt bikes came and we started making the jumps bigger.

Right away we learned to stick anything you can in the jumps so they take less dirt. Logs, stumps, whatever. Also, table tops take way too much dirt when shoveling by hand (the only way we ever did it). In the beginning our jumps were kinda tabletops, but with a lot of dirt taken out right behind the takeoff, because you have to go dead slow to fall into a hole 2 feet after the take off. And everything were we lived was sand. Nothing but sand. So you hit a jump like 3 times and the face would be shot. Old carpet (THICK) and plywood became our friends, especially once ramps got larger.

Before you know it you're going from 2 feet of air to 12 feet, and playing paper-rock-sizzors to see who has to climb the tree and cut down the branches that are hitting you in the face some 15 feet up there.

Oi don't knock the potential of a good maddick/pick and shovel. Perhaps making a table top might be a bit tuff but thats why i look for good natural terrain to cut it down a bit. Matter of time u wanna spend before you get sick of it. Ive made a 50 foot step down with just a shovel.

Can someone help me out with some dimension on a kicker ramp? My mate is looking to make one in his metal work class. Hopefully use it to jump into a foam pit im hoping to make.... recycling the old chicken pen.
