My factory service manual does not say anything anything about this. I have a Clymer manual that has a spec for how high the tensioner wedge can stick out, but that's it. Any advice? Maybe someone has a different year service manual that has more information.
A new chain costs $75, so I'd like to know if I really need one.

A simple test to see if a chain is worn - if you can lift the chain off the sproket and see more than half the tooth - it's time for a new set.
Pull back on the chain, on the rear sproket, parallel with the swing arm.
If the sprokets are hooked or worn, it's time to replace the set as well.

PS Always replace the chain & sprokets as a set. A new chain on worn sprokets accelerates wear.

TobyS, The "wedge" indication, is realy not bad, as that indicates the amount of "throw" the tensioner is using up, to compensate for the stretched chain. Sometimes you will actually see distorted or worn teeth on the cam sprocket. But by that point the chain is way over due. I tend to replace them anytime I'm doing a rebuild or topend. They are easily done through the right side.
