My dad got a bike today!! I can't wait to do some good riding with him.
He bought an 1996 XR400.
I just got off of it and here is what I thought of it.

It was really hard to start so dad started it(he has some sorta "Honda" magic)
It was noticably heavier then my KDX
It did not matter what gear I was in.
The power was vary smooth...it was a wierd feeling compared to my KDX.
I have one queston though...Does the XR400 have a "hot start: or a compressian release. and which one can be used while riding?

I think I will stick to my KDX but dad loves it :)

The little short lever on the clutch perch is the compression release.

Sounds like maybe the valves need adjusted if it's that difficult to start.

The valves probably do need adjusting. ..but I am really short and I only weigh 130 and I'm not vary good at starting 4 strokes.
