Woohoo! Parts arriving all week :)

Background:
I have a 2004 KDX220R and it is stock except hand gaurds, fork and shock spring, and race tech gold valves.

Been loving it since I got it in April.

But I just got new skeleton warrior graphics from XGX arrived last week.

And now today I got this for it:
Scotts steering stabilizer
renthal bars
renthal grips
Michelin S12 tires
FMF silencer
FMF pipe and eline CF gaurd (sold to a friend I bought woods and should have bought Rev, Rev one ordered)
twin air filter

Tommorow I get another shipment of:
MSR rad gaurds
Factory Effex part number FX06-24124 all gripper black seat cover
black MAIER rear fender Product No. 14486
black UFO front fender part number 51-1105
black UFO front number plate part number 51-1306

Then friday my new EFM-auto clutch arrives, as does my rear hydraulic hand brake :yeehaw:

This is going to be cool.

I am so excited to get all the parts - just thought I would tell you guys. None of my co-workers in my computer job were interested in hearing about it ;)

I work with computers for a living also. The KDX is MUCH more fun and interesting than computers!

I'm jealous over all your cool parts. I bought a used 95 KDX 200 and can't wait to get rid of the purple seat. I see a lot of graphic/seat kits out there. Many of the kits are listed as 97-03, would these fit a 95?

I tried to PM you, but the forum says I don't have permission. Anyway, what do you plan on doing to your lighting coil to power the baja kit? The reason I ask is because Baja doesn't tell you that you must convert to a floating ground system. They do it when they rewind your coil, but if you use a Moose coil, or wind your own, or keep the stock, you have to keep the ground seperated from the engine and run a new ground all the way to the supplied regulator. I can't wait to get an MX fender and LED taillight for mine, the Acerbics that came in the kit is fugly.

I havn't decided yet. I'm hoping with the LED I can use the stock coil for a while. I guess I will run my own ground for now. I'm hoping to buy a moose lighting coil when I get some more money though. What did you do for your ground?

PS, I called baja and had them assemble a custom kit for me. I went with the led tail light and flush mount blinkers.

I bought a Moose coil and couldn't get the lights to work. After a phone call to Baja's lighting guru he explained what I needed to do. I cut the ground wire off the Moose coil and soldered a piece of wire onto it (I used 14 awg, I think 16 would be fine, but I had none), ran it out with the other wires to the voltage regulator. Just a note, be careful when routing all the wires around the stator plate, I left a little too much slack in the ignition coil wire and my bike got real slow and then died on Saturday, the flywheel decided to rub a big hole in the insulation. Got it together just in time yesterday to make it to my road test.

I got the flush mount blinkers too, I didn't even think to ask about trading for the LED taillight. My blinkers came with the wrong size nuts to mount them, so you may have to make a trip to the hardware store for some M4 nuts.

If you do a floating ground on your stock coil you should be fine as long as you don't use the headlight much. The kit is updated from what they show on the web. There is a parking light setting on the switch that runs the taillight and a 3 watt bulb in the headlight, so it takes very little power. Also, the blinkers and horn are now mounted in the headlight shell, so pulling it off for track riding takes about 15 seconds. I'm happy with my kit so far, although I think in the future I'd piece it together myself. I do lots of car stereo work and could make their wiring harness for far less than the $100 or whatever it is they sell it for.

Oh yea, and the Acerbics mirror is worthless, cept it gets you through inspection. By 40 mph mine folds in by itself.

thanks :)

My kit just arrived but I had to tell the UPS guy to come back because I didn't have the money to pay duty. I'm hoping he will be here any minute now as I was literaly just putting the last strap on my bike to go riding.

I didn't order the mirror, I will just get one from a bicycle store that goes in the handlebar plug.

The original title is in my name so I don't need inspection here. I just go to he DMV with an insurance cert. and get the plate.

What do I need to do to convert the original stuff to floating ground?

EDIT: I guess I can just move the ground on the stock stator the same way you did on the moose one. Also did you find the moose one worth it?

I never tried running the original coil with the kit. I'd say you need more power if you plan on running the headlight more than a few minutes at a time (the battery will run down quickly I would think). Even with the 75W Moose coil the lights dim at idle a bit, and using the blinkers at idle will cause the headlight and taillight to dim considerably.

Both the stock and Moose coil just have a small lead with a ring terminal on the end that is grounded by the screw that holds the coil in place. I used the soldering iron to heat melt the solder holding on the ring and removed it. I used a small, non insulated butt connector to hold the new ground wire extension to the lead off the coil. Then I soldered it all together, put a layer of heat shrink on it and buttoned everything up. There are 2 empty spots in the stock grommet to run more wires, so that was no problem. However, the new wire would not fit through the protective sheath from the engine up to under the seat, so I ran it along the stock wire harness and wrapped the crap out of it with electrical tape. You need a male bullet terminal to attach it to the voltage regulator, my Baja kit came with 3 or 4 extras.

I purchased this bike new, but the title says "Off Highway Use Only", so I needed to have a police inspection to get insurance and a registration. Michigan doesn't require blinkers, but I figure the more street-legal this looks the less hassle I'll get when I ride.

By the way, sorry for taking over the post 1tontj, just thought I would help out a fellow KDXer before he spends a few evenings pulling hair out trying to figure out why lights don't work and such.

I'm guessing by your user name that you have a built up Jeep? Or does it mean something else?

thanks for your help, I just got everything and it looks like a fun project for tonight :)

my email is mike - @ - hardwareshark - . - com

I will let you know what I do about the ground system. I also noticed baha has a 120 watt lighting coil for the KDX and it's $130. If I need a new coil I might just bite and buy the baja one.

Also, not to hijack again, but do you build jeeps? I have a 93 ZJ with 4" of lift. Lots of fun for soft trails and a blast as a daily driver, 400,000kms and still kicking

No problem hijacking the thread, wasn't a real serious tech thread anyway.

And yes, I build Jeeps. Here's some shots of my 1 ton TJ:

:yikes:

That's a bit bigger than my old man's TJ! Got some specs for us?! He has an 01 with 2" lift, 31's (getting 33x10.50's), a locker and some armor, and a 4 banger. I wheel an old beat Toyota with 34" LTB's, no lift, bobbed bed, snorkle, and some other junk. Soon as I get a place with a garage the real build will begin :p . Living in an apartment sucks, but at least it's ground floor so the KDX can live in the dining room. Hoping to buy a place before winter.

It's got a 14 bolt, and d60 that I narrowed, cut the bottom off the housing for more clearance, and added detroits and 5.13's to. D300 transfer case with HD tail shaft, 4to1 kit, and home made twin shifters. 1 ton CV rear driveshaft, Custom hydraulic ram steering built by me, built my own 6 point cage, racing seats, full harnesses, home made bumpers, 2" body lift 6" suspension lift, beadlock wheels with 38.5x14.5" Super Swamper SX's, single subwoofer, amps, speakers, CD, CB, etc.etc.

If you would have told baja designs what lighting coil you were planning to use they will customize the kit to fit your application, no extra charge. I Just did this with a moose 75wat lighting coil and they included every thing and the instructions with the kit. Extra jumper wire from the lighting coil with the connector attached.
