I have an 86 cr 500 (project) and it did not come with a carb so i bought an 89 cr 500 carb and it has 55 slow 172 main 1370 needle and needle clip is in 3rd grrove, i looked up 86 specs and its 60 slow 172 main and 1372 needle with clip in 4th groove. Should i switch to 86 specs or just put it on and adjust fly by wire??? advice???

First off is to determine your altitude. Then look at the specs. Generally you will find that the specs will be a bit on the fat side (rich side). The manufactures do this to protect their warranty issues. If the carb that you got is from the general area and altitude that you ride at then I would try that set up and see. According to the specs your main jet is the same so you will most likley not have a problem with top end burn down. However........check your plug to make sure.

If your concerned about the setup in the carb then change it to the specs and then tune from there.

Hows that for a firm opinion...........
