My son does not like his bars, his says they are too wide. My question is can I cut them down with a tubing cutter or should I just put them in the vice, and use a sawzall??? They are brand new pro tapers 7/8" aluminum.
I used a tubing/pipe cutter to narrow my stock YZ250 bars because I felt like I was hang'n onto a Texas longhorn. A simple job, I just trimmed 1" off each end filed down the sharp edge. I like the compact feeling for riding in the woods but, it does get twitchy at high speed so a steering dampner may be in my future. YMMV.
If this is for the KX65, the older models actually had a narrower bar. I am pretty sure thet it was widened for 03. Renthal sells a replacement (which I accidentally purchased some time ago) in the narrower size. Buying a new bar would save you the work, and give you the option of going back to the wider bar if he doesn't like it.
No it was for the 50 he snapped the original bars in half so I got him the whole aftermarket setup, it was way too wide for a 8 yr old, the tubing cutter worked great and he seems to enjoy the lower ride height mor similar to the stock 50 setup
I run Pro Taper SE's as well, and cut mine to the second mark on each side (I think each mark is 1/4" if I remember right). We've cut them with a sawzall and a hacksaw. The hacksaw is a little "safer" and easier to make an even cut, but the sawzall is quicker. Just don't slip and cut too much.
