Dodge Ram 1500 Exhaust

I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 Reg. cab and a 6 ft bed. I was thinking of getting a flowmaster 30 series exhaust system put on it, and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on it. I had it priced by my local exhaust specialist and he said he could do it for 450. Would it be worth it? Thanks

I assume you are talking about a cat back system that splits into duals coming out of the muffler. It depends on what you want. A 30 series is going to be fairly loud and from my experience flowmasters have a lot of in cab resonance. Not a problem if you like hearing it but would be bad if you've also spent a bunch on your stereo. It is my understanding that the split into duals at the muffler isn't going to give you any more performance than staying single the whole way. You might get a little more top end while giving up low end torque. I just put a turbo (Full Boar) style muffler on my 98 quad cab with the 5.9 and had it dumped (hidden) just after the rear axle. It sounds good and only cost me $95. Truck seems to run a little better. Gas mileage still stinks.

I don't think the cat back systems make much more HP. Especially for the money they cost.

Funny you bring this up. I have a '98 Ram and had to replace the muffler last month. I had the shop put a cheapo glass pack on. It sounded great but dang was it LOUD! I took it back in and they put some kind of turbo muffler on it. Now it has some mild sound to it, but it's liveable.

Cost was under $100. I like that. I mean the whole dang truck is only worth around $5-6K.

If you want a real boost in performance you'd need to replace the whole system. Even the cat. converter. I'd add a K&N filter too.
