We met up with Rickcee and his son Ricky around 11 am. today. We ran the Hare Scramble course first with a guy Rick knows named Mike, rides a WR450. We maintained a good pace through the course. The course was mostly 2nd and 3rd gear, with a couple open straights. It was moderatley challenging in spots, where bent saplings jutted across the trail. Funny how my front brake lever had a way of finding the saplings, leading to some embarassing stoppies.
After Matt and I cut some not so hot laps around the little loop behind the primitive camping area, plus Matt hitting the pee wee track awhile, Matt was tired, so I hooked up with Rick and Ricky again to run the Blue trail. This was also new to me, as in the past all I ever did was the MX tracks and the swamp loop. The Blue trail had lots of new sections, mostly bypasses around rutted out areas. Some of the new stuff was a little tight, although Rick advised that the red trail was much tighter. Fortunately they did not subject me to that. 14+ miles of Blue trail was quite enough for me, thank you very much...
My knuckles found out they would like to be protected by more than my gloves. :P Fortunately, I was able to keep it on 2 wheels, most of the time, and we got through unscathed. I was impressed by Ricky's riding abilities. He is one fast 13 year old on that 125! And Rick was staying with Ricky, despite Ricky's unfair advantage of youth. :)
I really enjoyed the trails, in fact I took all of one lap on the MX track, because the trail riding was so good. It sure is a lot cooler in those woods. Now I can be as cool as Crash. In fact, I had to do my best Crash impression with my shades, since I seem to have forgotten to pack my goggles. Doh. :P Unfotunately, the lack of eye protection has given me that "happy Rastafarian" look. Good thing I did not get stopped for speeding on the way home. Not that I would speed. Much...
Matt really improved his riding on the mild trails, and is now comfortably shifting from 1st all the way up to 4th, and back again. That is more of an accomplishment than you might imagine. One step at a time... :) Matt also enjoyed riding a little with Mike's 7 year old daughter, who seemed to be really liking her KLX110.
All in all, a great day, with great company. Rick and Ricky are first class, very low key and friendly.
I look forward to more DP trail riding with Rick and Ricky (and hopefully others) in the near future. I did see Ridin a Cow and Tweekey, but I think once they saw all the scratches on my plastic and deduced my limited riding "skills", they wisely kept their distance. :( Maybe next time they will take a chance. :) Maybe we can even all band together to convert Crash.
