After lurking in the MotoPhoto forum for quite a while I finally have something to post! I've been shooting mx for about three years now with an "SLR like" Fuji S7000. It was a good camera to learn the basics with, but horribly slow for sports shooting. Now finally, after years of lusting after every new DSLR that came out, I have my own! The 40d rocks!

I couldn't get my hands on a 70-200 2.8L for this day, so I borrowed a 100-400L for these shots.

 Nice work!

Those are all very good shots. I would be hard pressed to pick the best of that bunch, as I like them all. The two riders over the jump would be my favorite if the building on the right was not so prominent in the shot.

More unphotographic opinion- Nice. :) I especially like the ones of the rider in "pink".
All photos capture nice body position/eye intensity. Nice job.

Good stuff! I'm liking the 3rd shot a lot, well done!
As mentioned, just watch your backgrounds, ie; the 3rd hot would be perfect if not for the other rider. I'm not all that concerned about the crop (rear tire cut off), it works fine. The buildings, etc in some of the other shots do hurt them, but you are off to a great start

Great start Phil. You might want to look into a polarizing filter so you can clip the glare coming off the goggles. You did a great job of capturing the intensity in the eyes of the riders. The filter will help show it more clearly.

Thanks for the comments everyone, I hope to keep improving my technique.

Rich, a polarizing filter would definitely help with the glare, but with a "slow" f4.5-5.6 lens I'm not sure if I could afford to lose a stop...I'll check in to it though.

With that lens I'd say you're right, it's better to live with a little glare and get the shot. ;)

Good work either way.

Nice start, looks like you're on your way now! I've been considering that lens as I'm looking for more reach since switching to the Mark II from the 20D, how did you find the focusing speed?

The focus speed seemed great to me, but I've not used any other USM lenses to compare it to. Right now I'm trying to decide between the 100-400L or the 70-200L 2.8 for the MXoN. I'm leaning toward the 100-400 since I don't know how close to the action I'll be able to get.

One thing to note with the 100-400 is that it's a push/pull zoom. It seemed awkward at first, but after I got used to it I kinda liked it.

+1 on the polarizing filter and backgrounds. Some of them look a little dark around the rider, a little work in Photoshop would fix that though.

Thanks guys for giving Phil the C&C. I have been telling him for a long time he has good stuff, but I don't think he believes me all the time  . I told him to post in here and get opinions from you guys.

The old camera was really holding him back. I know he'll have some awesome shots from MXoN this weekend.

BTW, I really like the last pic too :)
