Favorite range gun: hands down, a "hot-rodded" Colt 45 ACP shooting handloaded semi-wadcutters. Makes a nice visible hole.
Home Defense: Double action 9mm. Sig is my favorite (German makes are superior), but for home I think the Ruger is a better value and has added safety features.
Bore: I tend to side with the momentum vs. kinetic energy argument favoring the 45, but placement/accuracy is paramount and I'm a Jeff Cooper kinda guy, except for home defense.

Ammo: I've always been concerned about what gets hit on a miss. For home defense, I load a slower round with a bigger hollow point bullet that will spend energy quicker when it hits walls or whatever was missed. Last I looked at store ammo, "sub-sonic/big bulleted" rounds were available in 9mm and 40acp.
