I had asked for some radios for Christmas for us to use at the track. I need three units. I got 2 different brands of these units (Cobra and Audiovox) and I haven't really been able to find anything that tells me if these will be compatible? They are both packaged in that dang plastic you have to completely destroy to open them so I don't want to open them just to try and find out they won't work together. As you can tell I really know nothing about these things, are they all compatible with each other or should I attempt to exchange one set for matching brands?

They should be compatible Chili, they all have various channels you can use and all brands have the same range just some offer sub channels. We use these radios at Dirt Week and we all have different ones and as long as they are on the same channels we have no problem. I have two different sets myself and they talk just fine provided I get them on the same channel.

I have Cobra and some off brand that I can't remeber at the moment and like Patma said the channels are the same between the two.

I have three different sets and at least one of them cannot communicate with the other two. You can hear but not send. No guarantees of compatibility, you might get lucky you might not.

I'd exchange a set and get like units but that's just me.

Thanks guys, Guess I'll pop open the packages and play with them to confirm

spoken like a true male ....

I have 6 different radios and four different brands. They all communicate with each other assuming I have the freq and sideband correct.

Some are limited to the lower 14 channels. If you have not opened them and have some that are limited, I would consider replacing them. Some of mine go to 21 or 22, if I remember correctly, which is nice when there are a bunch of folks around using the lower freqs.

Whew, glad I passed the test!

Both sets have 22 channels with 38 privacy codes according to the packages. The one set comes with neat ear pieces with voice activated mics, not sure how well those will work with all the noise on the track when I'm shooting photo's but would be nice if they did.
