I screwed up my PM box,I deleted old messages and now it shows 0 new - 0 unread - 4 total

I tried the other suggestions from another post, no luck

Oh sure as if HE knows anything

Go to the PM window and in the upper right hand corner there is a Jump to folder box- use this to check each folder. If you have any in the sent or tracking they will show in the total messages.
