As my '89 Chevy C-1500 is getting a little long in the tooth,
The girlfriend and I spent last Sat. checking out new trucks.

Now here's the deal I'm a Chevy guy and would like to stay that way. The old mans got a big turbo diesel dually Dodge with the 2 stage upgrade (yes it hauls and HAULS) and my best buddy has the F-250 Quad cab 4X4 (bad mamma too) but I still like my chevy.

Because I live in Denver and that means mountains and lots of altitude (read 20% drop in power) I need a big V-8.

I always thought Chevy made the following:

305 V-8
327 V-8
350 V-8 (what I have now in my old truck)
400 V-8
454 V-8

Now they badge them in cc's

the 5300 (think thats right) the 6000 and the 8100

So how do these factor out to the old Cub. in. scale

Is the 5300 a 305? the 8100 a 454 Does Chevy still make the 350?

The salesman was an idiot, kept showing me where the fuse box and air filter were. God I hate that.

Any insight?

I'm pretty sure the 6l is the 350.
My diesel is a 6.5l which works out to around 398 cubic inches.

....so....where is the fuse box? ;)

yeah, the 6000 v8 is the 6.0 liter, and vise versa, you would have to break it down to find out the cc's like the last post said...
I picked out what I am aiming for in about 6-7 months, I get a GM employee discount from our family......
Chevy silverado 2500 HD, 6.0 V8, Crewcab, short box. It is basically the closest thing you can get to the chevy/Fox concept truck. I personally dont need the 8.1 v8 or that kick butt diesel they make. the 2500 HD comes standard with the 6.0 v8.... I cant wait, with the 3 rail trailer I own, if needed, I will be able to tote 6 bikes and 6 dudes. thats alot of nuts!, no pun intended....I think that truck will be a keeper...

The new engines that you are refering to are different from the older engines in many ways. As far as I am aware, Chevrolet is not offering any of the older (305,350,454) engines any longer in any of their vehicles here. The newer generation motors are vastly different in that pieces are not interchangable. To calc CID of an engine, mulitply the cubic centimeters by .06103 (i.e. the 6L is 366 cubic inches).

O.K. so using that formula the 8.1 liter engine (the big block) is a 494 c.i. mill?

Maybe it's just me but I find it hard to believe Chevy is offering an almost 500 cubic inch motor from the factory.

But maybe thats just me.:confused:

That would be correct. The 305 was a 5.0, the 350 was/ is a 5.7 the 454 was a 7.4 and Ford's 460 was a 7.5.

Personally, I don't like the new "liter" or "cc" measurements. So, I've always had a 350 in my Chev. Since they don't make one any more, I'd probably go for the 327 (5300) or the 366 (6000). I hear the 366 is pretty tough on gas, and I also hear they're coming out with a smaller small-block (4600 or something) which I'd call a 283, that may be a little more economical.

Call me old fashioned . . . :confused:

My wife has the 4.8 in her '00 extracab 4x, and it really moves out (when needed), and averages 18 mpg. Its still a 250hp or so engine. Unlike the other brands we test drove, it can highway pass more easily without needing to kick down a gear. It can chug up modest grades and hold speed at 1200 rpm. If I towed over 3500# often with it, I may prefer the 5.3, but my 6.5 td does our towing.

I like the way the new chevy engine is layed out clean, alum heads and cast oilpan. Its not like the old days where the AClines, heater, tranny cooler, etc all overlapped each other into a nasty, hard-to-service mess. Couldn't be more happy with it after two years now.

Guess I have to eat my words. I've been poking around the websites and sure enough the 8100 is listed as 496 ci. That is a monster motor!

No wonder why I drained a quarter tank on the test drive.:scream:

Still looking at the 6000. As you said it tends to be a bit thirsty compared to the 5300 and 4800 but as I stated above, I'm at 5,280 ft. of elevation around town.

Go west for 30 minutes and I'm at 9k to 11k. That means the 285 horses that the 5.3 is rated at is suddenly a 225 h.p motor. Pulling two bikes and a camper to 11,150 ft at 5.8% grade (Eisenhower tunnel approach) the 6000 looks good.:eek: THe 8100 looks better, but 8+/- mpg is a little hard to swallow:scream:

the 2500HD 4x4 W/8.1 is not that bad on gas, it is mated to allison 5 speed auto, @ 65mph its only turning 1700rpm. but the temption of the monster motor at your comand, makes it hard to keep your foot out of it. have about 5500mi on it now, gas milage is city 8 to11 hwy @ 55-60mph 23 hwy@ 70-80mph16
all hwy miles have been fully loaded W/trailor, :p

Anyone look at the GMC "C3"? looks to be the same as the 2500 HD with full time 4wd.

yup same truck different grill:p Rodzilla I know of the high altitude problem you have(lived in ut.&co) this new motor gm claims it has altitude compensater:think the highest I've had it is around 3500ft and it ran fine. live at sea level so most of my time in it has been on the beach:cool: I got locking front&rear diffs.:p

Mmmmmmm C3! I'm going to try and squeak a test drive of one when I find one on a lot. They make 25hp more than the regular motor and have a higher tow capacity than a regular half ton and if the interest rate was 0%...... I could be tempted.

You could just go for the diesel and not worry about getting poor fuel mileage or power :p

23mpg with the 8.1L??? Holy cow.. My short box 99 GMC half ton with the 4.3L V6 can't get 20.
Go for the diesel if you can afford to bite the initial bullet.. Those fuel mileage figures sound great for the 8.1 too. :scream:

Cam M. I also have one of those 4.3 in the wifes s10 blazer it gets about 18-22 depends on how I beet it , 23mpg is hard to get in my truck . I was able to on I 80 in ohio . between 1st toll both going west to toleido cops everywere kept my speed down:( and road has little to no hills:p don't want to talk about mpg on the beach!

Well now I really have to think things out!


I really want a new truck (bordering on need) but 31K-40k is a lot of cash
I just refied the house, paid off all my debt except for my XR and my house payment are almost the same.

Naturally being a guy I can't be happy with what I have. I have this month with no house payment so that cash is burning a hole in my pocket (hence the new truck)

But dang I just got out from under the credit card and I have enough left from the refi. to pay off the XR (which I know I should do). I'm ready to step up from my XR400 and really want a KTM 400 EXC or when Honda steps up the XR replacement (XR450f?). Don't even mention the $ I owe my Ex wife!

Man can't I have my cake, and eat it too?

I guess I never shoulda looked at those purty new trucks:(

man rod I sure under stand that. I guess I was just lucky. the yahama dealer I buoght the bikes from last xmas has known the owner of the chevy dealer for 25yrs and he introduced me to him. got my truck for dealer cost :) still cost me 30k

Just bought me a 2001 Chevy 2500 HD 4X4 Duramax Diesel yesterday. I got one heck of a deal trading in my '96 Chevy Suburban with a 350 in it.

It has sooooo much smooth power you wouldnt believe it. It rides almost as smooth and turns just as sharp as my '98 Z71 Chevy Truck.

Now about that 19 foot travel trailer....anyone in the market for a Tahoe Lite travel trailer?? ;)

I cant wait to get me a big toyhauler to put behing this new torque
monster!!:)

I have a buddy that has a 2500HD with the 8.1 and Allison. He is getting 16-17mpg on the highway.

I bought a 1500HD 4x4 4 door yesterday with the 6000. Some are getting only 13mpg with the 6000 but with 4.10 gears. I got 3.73s so I will see what turns out. I was getting 15 in my normal driving in my 350 Z71.

I don't drive for mileage though :)

I have an 01 Chevy SLT CC SB 4x4 Duramax/Allison 2500HD. I've got almost 3k on it now and I've been checking mpg religously. Keeping track of it in a book. Sounds kind of anal but the reason I dumped my 3/4 ton 99 SLT 454 burb with 30k on it was mileage so I want to know.

So far, it's been just over 19 on two lane hiway cruising with frequent passing, close to 18 all around and as low as 10 on the interstate hauling my 8.5'x19' enclosed trailer at 80mph. I was a bit disappointed with the interstate numbers but I was really on the gas and it was still 3.5-4mpg better than the 454 did. I've not had it on an unloaded interstate type cruise yet but I'd expect that to be over 20mpg. Diesels tend to get better mileage once they fully break in, too.

This is my first diesel and I'm impressed so far. It's much quieter and much more powerful than the ford/dodge products, the tranny is awesome, the looks can be argued but the top level interior is much nicer in the GM than the others, IMO.

I bought a 2500HD crewcab 6.0 liter in Dec 2001. I love it. It is not great on gas but it is consistent. It gets 13.5 MPG pretty much any where, loaded or not. Pletty of power and with 4.10 rear will pull most anything. They are pricey but you get what you pay for, and I plan to have this one for a long time.

4.8l is 262ci
5.3l is 294ci
5.7l is 346ci
6.0l is 364ci
6.6l is 403ci
8.1l is 496ci

The 5.7 346 (350) is cast aluminium and comes in Camaro/Firebird and Corvette.

The small block truck engines (4.8, 5.3, & 6.0) are the same basic block in cast iron with a different bore and stroke. Actually the 5.3 and 6.0 have the same stroke as the 5.7, only the 4.8 has a shorter stroke and it has the same bore as the 5.3.
