I am talking of the classic dune buggy not the van, I was wondering if any of you can help me with my odyssey, I want to paint it so it will look good again (It is faded beyond colour) And I was wondering what the steps to painting the plastic are? I want to paint the main body which is a hard shell type plastic, and the fenders, but I don't want it to look like garbage, is there special paint I need? Or special priming I should do?

thanks alot guys

have you considered buying new plastic for it?
I remember when I was younger I wanted one because they look cool, never did get one though. Now down at the local honda shop they've got a 1989 with $3200 on it
These things haven't dropped much in price since they were new, it's unreal.

The '89 you saw for $3,200 was not an Odyssey, but a Pilot.
The Odyssey's were 250-350cc machines that had front suspention (limited) but were hardtail in the rear!
(made for some interesting rides on those tractor stutterbumps!)
I believe the Odyssey ended production in the mid eighties.
(mine was an '82 model.)
The Odyssey also suffered from lower resale values.
(i picked up my '82 for $650)

The Pilots on the other hand had 400cc liquid cooled 2 stroke engines -w- electric start and a reverse gear.
The suspention (front AND rear) was vastly improved from the Odyssey version.
As such, Pilot values are much higher.
And seeing Pilots selling for more that their original sticker price is not uncomon.

Painting plastic is very tricky, espcially on something like a fender. You have to use the right type of paint to get it to stick. Your best be would be to get some RITE dye or any other type of clothing dye and use that. The color will penetrate through the plastic and will not chip off llike paint. If the parts are white, you can dye them any color you want. Darker original colors, such as red may be a little more difficult

try cleaning the plastic with fine steel wool then wiping it down with denatured alcohol and painting with plastic bumper paint. It's pretty tuff stuff... good luck.

It cant be done

You cant paint plastic. Ive tried.

You best bet would be to simply replace them. The only place you can get plastic for it is at the dealer, and probably for a largely inflated price. :(

Pilots are awesome. I want one.

I recently painted an old piece of plastic on my XR. I used black bumper paint, and the primer for it. It cost me about $10 for both cans. It's working good so far. No chipping or anything. I tried to dye it first, but the dye wouldn't penetrate the plastic.

Ironiclly, a few years back i bought my son an ATC70 for him to putt around the yard with.
It was pretty cruddy looking, so i figured i'd freshen it up a bit.
When it came to painting the tank and plastics, i figured he'd have it ripped up pretty quick, so i just cleaned her up good (sanded the tank a bit) and sprayed away!
It actually turned out pretty good!
(even though i used $2.00 a can bobo paint)
And believe it or not that paint job didnt start peeling for over 2 YEARS!!
Dont know how i pulled that one off.
Maybe that bobo paint is good after all.

Not True. My brother put a bunch of flex agent in some yellow paint and painted the number plate backrounds on his '88 CR250. It worked great! I do believe the preparation is ad stated above similar to plastic bumpers. A good body shop should be able to help you. Just remind them it's like a bumper and then they will understand. Remember they sniff a lot of paint fumes throughout the day so they might need a little help. ;)
