If you are a competitve rider that demands uttermost performance then you should service your shock every 20 hours.
My bike is a 01, bought it brand new, ride the piss out it one to two times a week and have never serviced it. Can I tell? I don't know when I service it I am going to throw a gold valve in it and let you know. ;)
I would say to do it early. I had a Suzuki DR 350. The shock still worked, but for the heck of it, I gave it an oil change.
Most of the stock oil had leaked out. The shock shaft was badly worn. I was lucky. I bought a new shock on e bay. This could have cost me several hundred in damage! i am not saying you need the re-valve package, just a look inside every now and again.
