It's a rheostat, much like the rotary dimmer switch on your chandelier.
Voltage flows into the TPS. Then depending on how much you're twisting the throttle will dictate how much voltage flows out of the TPS. In most cases, more throttle will mean more voltage coming out.
This reading is used to decide what ignition map to use, how much to open the power valve on CR's with the RC valve, and on FI vehicles, is also used in which fuel map gets used.
is it a safety sensor or will it kill the motor if needed. i thought it might stop the spark if the motor is reved out to long. what i am asking is what does is it do when sensing the throttle position?
on modern carbs, the TPS operates a powerjet- it comes in from approx 1/4 to 3/4 thottle- it switches off at 3/4 so the enigne can lean out nicely and get some topend power and overrev
