Should a crf230 run? I have noticed my bike getting extremely warm mostly where the crank case is. Not only that but after 2-3 hours after turning off the bike it is still pretty hot to the touch i would guess 120 degrees F. Not sure how hot it gets when running but after only 5 minutes of just cruising lightly it is to hot to touch. I am not familiar with air cooled engines and their operational temperature just seems weird that the case stays hot so long. I mean its only around 80 degrees out here and im getting plenty air to the cylinder head.

Clean the carb to be sure you don't have an obstruction causing a lean condition. Other than that, like our pal Pred said, it's probly just the nature of the beast.

I took off what looks like the snorkel on the top of the air box. Thought it would let the engine breathe better. Also thinking about removing the baffle, just wondering if this will affect jetting much? Anything to help uncork this thing.

By pulling the snorkel without rejetting, you took a bike that comes lean from the factory and made it even leaner. Not the best approach. Heat is the natural byproduct.

Time to get some jets and learn about jetting.

When removing the snorkel I did not notice any popping, idle was fine and there was no noticeable bog. However I have not cleaned the air filter from when i purchased a couple days ago used and opening up the air box would have little affect if I had a clogged filter to begin with. Also I live at around 180-200 ft. above sea level. I am not sure how elevation and jetting work if the lower you are the leaner you are or vice versa? Honda does sell a power up kit I believe for use with an uncorked crf230. Any jetting suggestions from other crf230 owners? And Rich, could I hire you to come up to Maine for a weekend and educate me on jetting :)

A little off topic but instead of starting a new thread, I have heard people on other websites claiming that removing the baffle and snorkel can cause engine damage even when jetted properly. Something about not having the proper back pressure and causing the engine to loose compression..? Can somebody clarify this please?

The most important point that needs to be clarified, is you need to stop listening to idiots on the internet. ;)

That first link is dead Rich.

Thanks Indy, I forgot about that. I'll move the original article to my site and repost the link.
