How to get more grunt out of XL-250

I recently bought the 1984Honda XL-250 with a top end rebuild for $800 to go trail riding with one of my friends with his clapped out smoking piece of S#it honda XL-350.
I want to now how and what restrictors to pull out to get that extra bit of grunt:p
I was thinkin about putting a stain tune pipe on but they cost as much as the bike.

that age bike would have all of the rescrictors out now most likely but you can try an after market air filter or take the baffle out of the exhaust

Going down one tooth on the countershaft, or up two on the rear sprocket, is a cheap, fast & cool way to get a little more grunt.
