According to the world we live out in the sticks even though I can see the city across the river from us so nobody will run cable out our way. :coocoo: This forces me to subscribe to hughesNet satellite internet in order to get any semblance of "high speed" service (no the phone company doesn't offer us DSL either). Now I have put up with going outside mid snow storm to brush the snow off and I have tolerated the outages when severe weather hits but now....
Last week I got this email-
We are pleased to announce an upgrade to the HughesNet email service. The upgrade will provide customers with enhanced email features.

How will this effect me?
Between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time on April 26, 2008, you will be unable to change passwords or add or delete Hughes.net email accounts. However, you will still be able to receive and send email during this time.
Between 6:00 p.m. April 26, 2008 and 6:00 a.m. Eastern Time April 27, 2008, you will not have access to your Hughes.net email account. Don’t worry- any new emails will still be received at your account during this time!

well OK they are getting me improved email services and I can get by without email for a few hours.
Yestrerday I covered a Hare Scrambles but had a deadline of4PM today to submit the article still no problem. The editor made arrangements for the results to get emailed to me as soon as they were finished so I could do the article. Well I talked the trophy lady into giving me her copy of results when she was done figuring it would save me an hour or so of waiting for the email. I get home and work on the story get it finished attach it to an email and send it off only to get a message email failed to find server. Figure it is a glitch in my laptop so I grab a scandisc and load it on to put on the desktop so I can send it off. Desktop says email server cannot be found.
The internet works but no email server found. I call Hughes Net and the technician after 5 minutes of getting "michael" (who speaks with a very heavy East Indian accent :whoa: ) to understand my question I get the explanation that
"the upgrade hit a couple glitches that we did not expect but we should have service up in the next 48 hours" I mention I have a very time sensitive email I need to send and his response- "I am very sorry you should be able to send it in the next 48 hours or so" :blah:

Luckily I got hold of the editor at midnight and he set up an account so I could access his computer on line and upload the files directly.
Now 24 hours later still no email but I should have it any day now :bang:

If you had internet access but no email, you could have just grabbed a hotmail, yahoo, gmail, etc. email account and used that. Something to think about in case it happens again.

I thought about that but was not sure about the 21 photos I was submitting along with the story.

I agree with Friar Tuck.. I have an account at each of those. Never know when you'll need a backup.

They should all be able to handle multiple attachments, given that the overall size of the message and attachments isn't too huge.

I think gmail will allow attachments up to about 10 mb.

See if there is a NLS (near line of sight)provider in your area Dave. It's not messed up by weather and has various speed options. I've been REALLY happy with mine and it just so happens the guys that owns it rides!

Oldguy, they day you finally get away from Hughesnet is like selling a boat ;)

I used to use it 8 hours a day for work and sometimes I'd get so flustered I could cry! Had the old Direc PC download via Sat, upload via modem, then I had 2 way sat, and then Qwest DSL. For people who can't get DSL or any other Highspeed option it does work, but they are just a pain in the arse to work with and twice the money!

That is why I have 5 personal e-mail accounts. I know it seems like overkill but I have one just for spam so when I buy stuff I use that so that I'm not inundated with offers I'm not interested in.

Never can have too many e-mails IMO.

There's a reason the goldfish at his local Pet's Mart all hide under the bubbling treasure chest when he's "shopping".

Dave if you are submitting for magazines then those 21 photos were likely hi-res and large files? If so it's by far the best to be able to ftp your submissions if the editor can set that up.

That is what we did of course it took until 1AM to get it worked out and all of them submitted :bang:

Bsmith we have been polled over the winter if there was interest in a company running cable service to us (now that a subdivision with 60 houses is going in down the road) and I will be burning the hughesnet modem in the front yard the day it comes in. Hughes net filled a void (Pat no NLS in our area to hilly and wooded) but barely :pissed:

Finally tonight the email came back up and I got a total of 2 I now wonder where all the safely stored ones are being stored  since I normally get 15 to 20 a day (not including offers to enlarge....well you know what I mean) and the 3 test ones I sent from work did not come either

Hey BEARS fan :moon: :moon:

I heard the bears offered the pack any first 4 round picks they had for the next 10 years if we would take Grossman off their hands :nener:

And for you un-schooled FIBs in the art of cooking/eating brats an uncooked brat the grease is still gelled so it wouldn't help the dish but a cooked fresh off the grill brat could sure coat the dish

Oh man I used to have Hughes Net internet. Man oh man was that the worst crap ever. There were times that dial up was faster than the Hughes. And It would go out everytime it rained, snowed, excessive clouds, wind was over 25 mph, a flock of geese could put out that thing. By the time we got to switch over to cable I had the HTTP 404 Not Found message memorized.
