Was out at a local track 2 1/2 months ago feeling food and went over a short and quick 3' bump leading back to a big jump but at the moment of hitting the small little jump I completely screwed everything up on prepping for it. I hit it, went up, came down nose first ( have scraches 3/4 the way up the top of my front fender) and to the side only to say OUCH a few times before I hit the rock hard dirt... my question is as I have not been to a Dr. yet is why is my shoulder still hurting after this long of a time? I can ride just fine and do normal work just fine it only hurts like a B**** when I try to push or move my arm directly straight up or when I am in bed and am moving that arm up under the pillow. Any of you had this type of injury? I will try and see a Doc some time this week or the next...just asking. Thanks! Jeff.

Sounds like a torn rotator cuff. It's the not being able to raise your hand straight up that's the giveaway.

I just had mine fixed (surgery) and this is one of those injuries that doesn't fix itself. Get to a doc and get an MRI. You want to see an orthapedic surgeon not your family quack.

Sounds like mine - the dr. originally thought rotator cuff and found out two ligaments were torn and he pinned them back down. I waited 8 months before surgery so I could ride during the season. I did ortho. first part of June and started riding in September. The shoulder was sore and weak but really didn't hurt much(advil). get the surgery if needed and make sure you rehab properly.

I had this same type of injury. After 3 years, it finally quit hurting. After the first year or so, I would forget about it, then do something that would "inflame" it again. So far, I haven't had any pain this year. I suppose my other muscles have developed so that they mask any weakness in that shoulder. Shoulda had it fixed, but I can't afford to have surgery. So, I've just lived with it.

Injured myself the same way twice, once in 1994 and it hurt me non stop, even had a loose shoulder that would pop out on occasion. Just recently (July) did it again crashing a DB and now it no longer pops out, just causes constant pain when I try to hand anything behind me, stand with my arms behind my back, or reach over my head. I am having another Xray done next week along with both of my knees so the military will pay for my MRI because they are starting to hurt pretty bad as well.

Sounds familiar...
With your back against the wall can you take your elbow and push backward and standing beside the wall can you push your elbow into the wall?
My Doc put 2 pins in my shoulder and frankly the surgery was easy... more of a inconveinance than anything(No riding and no lifting, etc). I used pain med's the first day and that was it. Don't let it psyche you out!!

I'm not saying it is or it isn't. When I hurt my shoulder, I went on the internet and determined that I had a torn rotator cuff. My symptoms were exactly what they said. I then went to the Dr. and he took one look at it and said that I cracked my scapula. Didn't tear anything.

My advice is to go ans see a good orthopedic guy at least once. It will make you stop wondering about your injury.

Thanks! I will get my lazy but in there soon. Yes I can push my elbow either way into the wall as hard as I can with out any pain.... so does this rule out the rotator cuff?

My shoulder was different based on the elbow exercise. I had no strength doing that exercise with a very dull pain. The ortho. doc. thought mine was a torn rotator cuff also and it turned out to be 2 ligaments that were torn loose.

I agree w/MikeT... go see an ortho. doctor.

Not sure what my problem is unless it's just old age kicking in. No crashes or anything, just woke up one morning and my left shoulder hurts. It's mostly in the mornings but some days are worse than others. It especially hurts as I reach to pull back the shower curtain 1st thing in the morning. It pops pretty constantly but it doesn't keep my from riding. It feels like the shoulder pops out of socket. I did dislocate the same shoulder about 10 years ago but no probelms from it in years.

I'm just getting over a shoulder injury that happened this past summer. Like you it hurt like hell at night mostly. It was the worst pain I think I have ever had, and I have had some bad injuries while in the military.

I can only agree with what everyone else has said about getting to a good ortho doc. I didn't have to have surgery, but did have to go to physical therapy for awhile. Mine wasn't torn enough to warrant surgery without giving it some time to see if it would heal on it's own. Trust me, I went through alot of different pain pills....man I can see how folks get hooked on pain pills. As to date it is doing great, but still hurts some nights when I have been using it to much during the day. The Doc told me it could take up to a year for it to quit hurting and heal all the way. So get to a good Ortho Doc soon, don't mess with the quacks at your local clinic. Good luck with it, hope you heal up soon. At least it is fixing to be cold and wet so you won't miss much riding while you heal up.

Your symptoms sound just like my cuff did. Another good test is to hold the bad arm straight out to your side if you can and bring your hand straight up. Then try rotating the hand forward like you are throwing a ball just by rotating the upper arm (no chest) and if you can't complete the motion to straight down it is probably torn. On the up side though soft tissue brusing also lasts a long time so the base of the cuff may be brused and severely inflamed and just putting pressure on some nerves.

Get it checked, get it fixed, go back to the track and start all over.
Good luck.

I hurt my shoulder as I was highsided off my bike and my husband also said I tore my rotator cuff. I went to the chiropractor a few days later because I had a crick in my neck from not being able to sleep on my right side, the side I hurt. After telling him what happened and how my handle bars were ripped from my hands as I went down, he took my arm, wound it up and pushed. I thought it was going to hurt, but after he did that I could raise my arm and had full range of motion.

i crashed about 4 weeks ago going over a tabletop.

ive had that same "putting my arm under the pillow" pain ever since. it does seem to be getting better though. i've been going to the gym 3-4 times a week and doing a lot of slow laps in the pool. seem to be helping.

the comment about the base of the cuff being bruised and inflamed is what i'm hoping is all that is wrong with me.

but i have the same pain.. keep us posted!

I had the same pain in the right, then two years later in the left shoulder. I didn't tear anything but I did have what you call Frozen Shoulder. I had a sharp pain anytime I lifted my arm or twisted it a certain way. The pain would put me on my knees and forget about getting a good night sleep. Well for the right shoulder I did two months of physical therapy 3 days a week and it didn't help at all. Finally after about a year the pain went away and I had almost full motion back, although I still cant throw a football. When I got it in the second arm I refused the therapy and the pain went away as well in about a years time. Hope it goes away sooner than mine did. But then again I'm not a doctor and you probably have something totally different.

Wow, i thought I was the only one! I had the same injury after coming off at the top of fourth gear. The mri showed that the cuff had pretty much exploded and all the ligaments and surounding tissues we just a pile of flesh. Go see an ortho professional right away cuz dude, you've got a long recovery ahead of you. Three years later I still get a sharp pain here and there. Its always a vertical motion that does it too. I did physical therapy and 2 surgeries and it still is'nt right.
Ymasaki, quit the laps dude! You need to heal, just keep it flexible and take it easy, the exercise will make it worse.

Keep the knobbie side up!

The most common injury to a shoulder is a AC strain/tear. Depending on the severity of the strain/tear you should be able to self rehab. your own shoulder. I strained mine a few months ago and now after self rehab. it's stronger than before.

Sod - sorry to hear about that, shoulder injuries suck. I tore my rotator cuff 3-4 months ago and it's still giving me lots of problems. A lot of Dr.s seem reluctant to do surgery and want you to do PT for months and months and months before recommending surgery. I recently went riding a couple of times and the shoulder didn't rebel too much but it kills if I try to do things like fold laundry lol. I'm going to give mine 3-4 more months and then see where it's at.

I can relate to you. I was hit by a car on my street bike while riding in the canyons. I was hit by an elderly asian lady. I flew thru the air and hit the side of the mountain. I broke my collarbone and ended up with only a few scratches. I was wearing my alpinestars jacket and it saved me from any further injuries. I did that in Sept. and it is just now feeling better4 months later. I had to do physical therapy for a month to help regain the motion. I have sold the the street bike and entering back into the dirt bike scene with a Yamaha yz250f.
