OK , just to put my 2 cents in, what I have done to put new grips on for ever is to pour gas into the grip and slid them on (make sure it is NOT pre-mix) and let them dry overnight. I have never had a problem. I also run hand guards on my bike so they can't slide off even if they start to spin.

The mechanics wire i used is common, local hardware store stuff. You can cut through the grip before the wire breaks, no problem, if you tighten it too much. I have hand guards on one bike, aluminum bar ends on the other, they prevent the end of the grip getting punched out by the bar when you drop it, and can prevent a stuck throttle, too.

I just use stainless steel mig welding wire (I used to work as a welder) but off the reel it is to hard and breaks when it is twisted. So I just cut off a few feet,wind it into a roll and put it onto a fire until it is red hot (and by doing so annealing it) then it twists just fine and seems to hold until I want it off.
