I'm 39 and getting back into it. I haven't ridden in 3 or 4 yrs. I raced at the intermediate level at our local trax for several years on a 250 2 stroke. I'm not planning on racing again, but I do plan on riding on regularly with my son at local practic trax now that he is old enough to ride. I did throw a leg over a 2005 250f briefly last year and remember thinking that I really liked the power. Does anybody have any advise?

Welcome to the site

Be sure and go to your User CP and update information relating to your location, type of riding, etc. After that grab a spot on the couch and tell us a bit about yourself.

Check out the What Bike Do I Get... ? forum for great information on which dirtbike might best suit your needs and desires. There is a great group of folks that hang out in there always willing to help a returning newbie to the sport.

Again, welcome to the site and shout if you have any questions!

In my opinion if you are coming off of a 250 2T and you were happy with the power output then you should go 450. You will notice a power loss going from a 250 2T to a 250 4T. I would recommend riding both then deciding but in my opinion if you are coming off of the 250 2T and you liked it, I would stick with the same class and get a 450.

I am 6'3" 240-250lbs (depending on the day's inputs and outputs) and I LOVE the 250Fs. I bought an 05 YZ250F and raced it last year along with my normal CR250(s). Definitely didn't get as tired on the YZF, was just as fast or faster, got better finishes, BUT did notice the lower HPs at certain tracks or mostly in certain situations. I have more fun on the YZ250f no doubt. Test rode several CRF250s and a KTM250SXF and had a blast on those also.

That said, the plan is to go back to the CR250(s) for motocross this year IF I like the YZF at the harescrambles. I did feel like I was hammering the 250F most of the way around the track and there are a few jumps and straights where the extra power comes in handy.

Hey Tommey Gun! I recognize your user name from the TDR.
I ride a 450 EXC Off Road and love it, I think if the 250 felt like it had enough power you might be happy with it. Maybe a friend has a 450 you can try too just to be sure?

I have a YZ250, and a WR250F. I'm at 165 lbs. on a heavy day, and love the WR250F ... but, I really do miss the light feel and extra snappy power I get out of the YZ250, yet don't miss the fact that I'm flapping around behind the YZ250 like a leaf in a tornado when I open it up. Then again, I wouldn't trade the way the WR handles and lugs the hills and handles the mud and tighter trails. If you are at 215 lbs., you may want to look at the 450, as I've found the limits of the 250F can be reached quite easily. I've often thought about trading the 250F for a 450F, but the weight of the bike versus my body weight has always stopped me from doing that, I just can't throw a 450F around like I can the 250F.

Good luck!
