Overall it sounds like everyone is happy with their 03's except a few which is always the case. I'll let you guys know how I like mine when I get it and put it together. $3899 no shipping since I'm going to the source..woohoo!! This thread has been very informative and I hope 03 owners will keep posting their mods and set-ups. This will no doubt save myself and others valuable set up time. I have 4 races I would like to hit this spring and won't get alot of riding time before then so getting the set up done quickly will help alot. geez I just said set up alot..haha

im in the same boat as most of you guys are i myself own a 2003 KX250 and looking for just that bit more topend with out spending lots of money. would a set of boyesen reeds do the job?
i have had past experiecne with these reeds on my 125 and find them very good, how will they go on my 250?

A good trick on the old kx's was to use 2 base gaskets.Changed port timing a little, slighty lowered compression for a little extra over rev. This mod does work and it is cheap. :aj:

I've been riding my 03 KX250 for a week now and love it. This thing pulls harder than my 93 CR250 and I'm happy with it. Mine cost me $3995 plus tax,ect... but it was well worth it. I could have bought a CR or YZ or RM for $5200 plus tax, ect... but why would I? IMHO, nothing beats this KX for the money.

Where can you purchase the power valve spacer? Or does anyone have the thickness of the spacer. I'm working on filling in the slight hole in the middle. Installed a rad valve and it seemed to add a slight amount on top with no loss in mid or low end. I added two teeth to the rear sprocket and can easily catch the next gear in sand or mud. This gearing was done to make third match the gearing I always use - I like third gear in the woods. I've had a 98 kx, 2001 CR (With a lot of work to get low end) and a 2003 YZ - All 250's. If I can fill the small hole in the middle I think the 03 kx will be as good overall as any of them. I too am looking for the old 98's power - It just worked.

Update- front susp revalve- mid to check- very plush now. Stiffer rr spring. Protapers in mxbonz mounts, bars are windham bend- roomier cockpit. Maxxis IT's. 120/90-19 rr for more sidewall. down 1t on cs sprocket. Bike is now just as awesome in the woods as on the track. :) Someone asked in another thread about where to get the Moose skidplate-newportcycleparts.com. pn M228. Pipe guard there too, pn 610, need a torch to make pipe install easier.

Peace. :)

Power Valve Spacer

Answered my own question on the power valve shim thickness. Purchased 2 shim washers at Sears. 1.25 mm thick works very well. I also tried a 2 mm thick washer which was very smooth and removed the midrange hit. 2 mm worked well when it was slick but I will be going with the 1.25. The good news - Total cost for two washers $.52.

I did add a Phathead High compression head (k22). The bike now has the torque of the 98. Runs well with a little octane boost. Compression was raised about 20 psi over stock. This may have affected over rev sightly but tht is not where you ride a kx anyway. I will lkely try higher gearing with the added low end boost.
