I have been looking at buying a 98 KTM 400 sc and am unsure of this bike. A fellow dirt rider who owns a 520 EXC tells me that he has to change oil after every long hard days ride because KTM bikes typically have a small oil resovoir and cooks the oil. I thought he was joking at first but soon found out he was serious! He stated that if he doesn't keep running fresh oil every ride that he has more difficulty shifting the tranny. Does this seem unusual to any one? Is this a trait of KTM? They sure build a beautiful potent bike but i'm not interested in daily oil changes for enduro riding in the mountains. Some feedback would help make a decision a little bit easier.

The October 1999 issue of Dirt Bike Magazine has a great test on this bike vs the XR400.
I currently have a '95 RXC KTM dual sport, it has the same engine.
While a little heavy, it is bullet proof and handles the trails really well.
I love the left side kick start. After kick starting the bike, you don't have to switch legs to shift and take off.

You might be able to talk me into making copies of the article and mailing it to you.
