Now I'm cutting the bars, studding some tires, working out various used bike "kinks", and getting it ready for some bare banging. :ride:

(1991 Kawasaki KDX250 ~ loaded up at the hotel in Philly)

I'm new to smokers so I may need to tap the expertise of some of our more seasoned smoking vets to get some tuning tips.

I was really surprised at how well it ran when I test road it over the weekend.

I drove all the way to Philidephia over the weekend to get this thing, (and before anyone says a word... Even after the trip it was still a deal ) and now I cant wait to get it set up and try her out. but I can already see I'm gonna miss my magic button. Kicking sux. :bang: and this things kicker doesnt seem to catch properly.

The specs that I know:

-'91 KDX250
-new top end and cylider sleeve .1 over
-new boysen reeds
-pro circuit pipe and silencer
-enduro engineering bark busters
-decent tires, and brakes.
-new gaskets on cases, clutch seems good

so far it starts, runs, and goes...well!

Everything seems to work.

Total cost including the trip to Philly to get it...$1078

Wolfy,
Hope it works out well for you. Gavin rode a KDX for a year, very reliable bike. Jeff Fredette is an expert on the KDX. Search Fredette Racing to find his site. Lots of great information on getting the most from them. JustKDX is another source.

Sheeeeeshhhhhh Freddo, thanks for the vote of confidence.. Those 2fiddies were AWESOME - I rode mine TO DEATH and then some.. When I started noticing the paint seperating from the frame on the welds I went to the KX500....
I know the "real" woods riders didnt like them because they were wide but I LOVED mine!!!
Mine liked aftermarket organic brake pads - great feel at a good price..
Dropped in a set of XR400 springs in the front and that helped on challenging the whoops. You can now get aftermarket cheaper from Fredette..
Check the shock linkage bearings for grease (not a bad job really) FIRST THING! If their dry it will save you alot of $$.
I ran/run TCW3 (found EVERYWHERE) at 32:1 and that KDX loved it.. Gave me lots of room for error at the gas stations!
I jetted mine and found that running the carb at 1/4 below tank line on the bowl was perfecto for consistant jetting (set with the needle&seat). Then jet accordingly..
Larry always said that the little green sleeper was much faster then a KX250 (of that year).. IT WAS!!!
Someof that was due to the WR tranny, some was do to someone redoing the topend with KX piston and putting in the thinner KX head gasket on a rebuild.. Had to run pump premo after that but it really brought the motor to life..
As in ALL smokers, keep and eye on the pipe seal at the jug - they WILL suck in dirt/water.. Taken care of that engine is BULLETPROOF and will go THOUSANDS of miles - on and off road!!
Ohhhh yea, now I member.. I had a falling out with the local Green dealer over that one bike.. When I got it it still had the stock piston in it.. I rode it two years and decided to slip in a new one.. The old one had a "B" stamped in it and the dealer only had "A" pistons.. I did some checking and found out that there was .003 diff tween the 2!! HOKY SPAMOKY - I told him that was my wear spec right out the window! They tried to tell me to use what they had - yea right!! Pro-X is the ONLY supplier of "B" pistons for these and they are GREAT stuff!!! Fairly reasonable too!!!
Watch the tranny fluid for "milkyness".. That little seal on the water pump likes to groove out the shaft and - bingo - little leaky..
ALL in all - GREAT FIND THERE WOLFY!!!
Hope all this info that you asked for.. wait - you didnt ask.. oooooppppsss, got caught up in the hype of expertism that Fred laid on me. sorryyyyy...
If you need anything just ask.. Be glad to raddle on :aj:
Oh yea, run 10/40 Quaker in the tranny and fill it to the top of the glass - your kips activator will thank you.. there I go again..
Woodsy :ride:

Wolfy I have the hookup for all the 2-stroke oil you are gonna need. Its synthetic and CHEEP. I have a few extra bottles laying around that you can have. Only 2-strokes I have anymore are weed wacker, leaf blower, and chain saw. I dont really need 10 quarts of 2-stroke oil for that. You are welcome to it. I know where there is lots more for about $20 a case.

I have ran this stuff in every 2-stroke I have rode and it works great. Worth a try to see if you like it. I always mixed it 40:1 (16 oz to 5 gallons) and it was great.
