I'm sure most of you are familiar w/this area (tight woods section at Red River) but I just rode it for the first time yesterday and... :yikes:
Definitely the most technical section I've ever ridden. The trees were very tight, but its the gnarly rocks that really kept testing my abilities. I learned very quickly (if after 4 "ejections" is quickly) not to look anywhere except where I wanted to go, otherwise I was going to cause myself an untimely exit from my bike.
There were a few different connecting loops marked on the trail. I was with 3 other riders and we agreed to stop after 1 loop and get out of the woods to move on to other areas. Unfortunately, somewhere after the first loop, 2 of us got separated from the guy who knew his way around. We ended up making at least 1.5 more loops before we ran across 2 other riders who were also lost. After the obligatory "Do you guys know how to get out of here? Me neither..." conversation, we decided to get back on the trail and look for ways out. I suggested hitting the first open clearing we could find, to see if we could at least see one of the main trails that led to the entrance at the bridge.
We were in one of the creekbeds (I remember 2 of them), this was the more wide-open, rocky one if it makes any difference. As we headed out of the creekbed, we saw a clearing and were able to find our way to a locked gate on a gravel road. No biggie, we were able to just follow the fence-line back down to the beginning of the trail under the bridge. Phew.
I have never been so sore from a day's ride... but hey, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger (I hope) That's what I get for forgetting my GPS
