I haven't been involved in the sport for a few years, but I've got the itch again. I'm looking at buying a well maintained 99' CR250 for around 1500 bucks. I want to race in local motocross races in the vet beg. class. If I am correct I'll be running with 450's. It just makes no sense for me at my skill level to spend 7000 grand on a new 4 stroke if a used 2 stroke will do. What do you think?

Doesn't matter if all the other bikes are 2-strokes, 250's, 125's or in a lot of cases, 85's ... there will always be someone there who's going to beat you, no matter what you're on. Get the CR, have fun and decide later if you are good enough that going to a new 4-stroke will make all the difference and put you on the box.

The CR is VERY capeable of winning races against any bike. Remember 95% rider, 5% bike.

You could put RC, Bubba, or Reed on that bike and any one of them could win.

they did a article in Dirtrider a while back.. i think it was maddo or some racer vs, one of the editors?

anyways they raced of 450's, 250F, a 100 somethin and a BMX bike, and maddo won on everything but the BMX bike. and the edditor rode the 450 the whole time

Someone in local shop told me the other day that Guy Cooper recently won a 40-over class race riding a 150 CRF against 250s and 450s. I think your take on spending a lot of money does not = winning, is absolutely correct.

As with Okie it's documented I provide slanted opinions... I experienced a similar situation several years back when returning to the sport with my son. I did a KX250 and being a pop it was used of course and it liked to kill me for two seasons (MX). Finally I realized not to ride beyond 8000 r's and always be a gear higher than need be to do a jump. At 50+ I did race this past season and it was fun... actually finished 2nd last both moto's but it was great. Point being, do what the pocket book can afford... at the end of the moto you know if you've won or not.

Welcome back and remember, it's not like riding a bicycle... age makes the mind / body work differently so take the time to re-learn.
