I was working on some small jumps that I built for practice. One is a kicker jump. Great fun, rip off the top and get some good air, then brake and turn before the nasty dirt mounds. Of course I could turn the dirt mounds into decent berms if I had some dirt delivered.

Second jump is a low short table top. I expect to clear the top and land on flat ground. I did well as far as getting a decent launch and getting 20 feet of air before the rear tire hit.

What I didn't do was check the ground for small ruts in the landing area. Big mistake. Usually I rake the area for rocks and groom out any ruts. Anyway, the landing was good. What happen next went so fast that I had to walk the area this morning to determine what happen. I never saw the rut. I was a nastly little zig-zag of a rut with embedded rocks.

As I landed, I started braking and turning slightly to the left. Very normal considering the riding area. This rut grapped my front wheel and my turn became a violent twist. Down goes my bike like a body slam. Landing on its left side (again ;)

The stock handguards (flaps) collapsed. This cause the clutch lever to crush my ring finger. Not broken, but very swollen. I am going to get some real handguards.

What really hurt is my back. First, let me say that I had all my gear on. Plus a special back protecter on top of my HRP flak jacket. My helmet received some serious gouges from rocks. Just think if that had been my head. My head and neck are fine.

However, when I hit, hand trapped in the clutch lever, head side/back of helmet digging into the ground, my body had to twist in a most unusual way. I could feel my spine and ribs (at the spine) being pulled in a curve (radius) that exceeded my elastic coeffecient. :)

I still got up, ask with wife to help push the BRP back to the shop, she took get my gear off and made me take a shower.

Man am I sore, there are things moving around my left shoulder blade, ribs and vertebra that I didn't know could move that much and still be attached. I am getting better and things seem to be moving back into place. Will see a chiropractor on Monday (he is in Tucson this weekend).

Wear your gear, check your landing area and make sure you have someone with you (or near by) when you ride.

P.S. The BRP is OK.

Update,

My Chiropractor friend saw me at his home tonight. Boy was I messed up. My rib cage was pushed up against by left should blade. That was causing all of the "new" grinding noises. Needless to say he moved everything back into place. He said my joints moved very easily and that the recovery should be quick.

He recommended heavy (5000 mg) doses of vitamin C and lots of water to promote healing.

Before I go to bed, I need to do take a towel rolled up from both ends toward the middle and place it in the freezer. Then lay my neck down on it for 5 minutes and finish with a single crunch to help pull the vertebra into alignment (a reinforcement of what he already did).

I will also sleep with a towel rolled up long wise, placed along the length of my spine. A towel similar to the one mentioned above, not frozen, will support my neck.

I will see him again tomorrow at his house. No driving or sitting at work for a day.

I thank God for his mercy. :)

X-rays

Mike and Kiwi,

Thanks for your kind words. I saw my chiropractor again tonight and I will be going in for X-rays tomorrow. Looks like I have strained the ribhead to vertebra attachments. I have faith in God and the prayers of the saints. I thank you for your prayers.

X-ray report - good news

I have strained, displaced (upward and to the side) and have slight tears in the ligaments holding the ribhead to the vertebra in several places. No fractures, no breaks, no complete tears. Thank God for his mercy and answer to prayer.

I am taking (under doctors recommendation):

1) Vitamin C 5000 mg per day for the next week. This is also good to load up on two days before riding if you think there is a good chance that you will be taking a fall.
2) Wobenzytm N (for imflammation) 7 pills, 3 times per day for 3 days (until next doctors visit)
3) Zinc 50 mg per day (three weeks)
4) L-Lysine 1500mg per day (three weeks)
5) "Sombra", a pain relieving gel.

and applied warmth (not a heating pad).

No lifting or straining for three weeks. Gentle stretching/exercise (still no weights) after three weeks. Probably 6-8 weeks before return to full activity.

This is a soft tissue injury (easy to reinjure) and if not treated with respect will become a lingering pain.

I had a similar experience with crushed finger. I low sided in a turn, and the clutch lever dug into the ground and was pinned up aginst my middle finger. It hurt really bad, and I went to the doctor for an x-ray. There was a hairline fracture in the very tip of my finger. No big deal...

It must take alot of guts to jump the BRP!!! Those xr's are like pieces of lead.

I've never heard of all of that really bad stuff happening. That sucks man!! I'm glad you have a good chiropractor!! You are also very lucky not to have torn some ligaments...

In a small, 2nd gear slide out on his xr80 (in his backyard) my cousin managed to break his leg completely in two right below the kneecap, and he tore his achillies tendon completely in half.

Good luck with the healing up!!

bluerider125 ,
Thanks, I am healing fast. I am getting around OK.

dell30rb,

My ring finger was trapped by the clutch lever. The handguard is a flap that collapses. I believe that I have a slight bone fracture between the two finger joints. Very minor problem.

One thing about jumping an XR650r, you have get it right on the face of the jump. I only jump small jumps. I try to accelerate on the face of the jump in order to keep the front end at least level while in the air. Like your said the XR650R is like a piece of lead.

These are flat surface landings (kind of like hitting a single whoop). I don't really have a lot of guts, just get a little bored with both wheels on the ground.

Need Sprayer!!!! I'm worried about you, bud!! I had not read this post until today!!! Had I known you were in pain, I would not have given you such a hard time in the Women's Forum. I hope you feel better soon, back injuries are the worst and yours sounds much worse than I can imagine.

Maybe for therapy you can pop into the Women's Forum and tell bbbom some more blonde jokes. They say taking risks grows inner strength!!! LOL!
