What's up folks?! My name is Brandon, I'm 27 and live in San Diego, Ca and I just acquired my first bike. I've been riding with my friends on their '02 YZ250, '00 CR250R and a couple of quads over the last few months. I've been itching to get a bike now. Coincidentally, I came home from work the other night and there was a YZ250 sitting on my front porch, the same one I had seen in my neighbors carport for the last 6 months. Turns out that my friend was visiting from Utah and was talking to this guy. He was moving, getting out of the desert scene and didn't want the bike. Yeah! Freebie for me!

So here lies the problem, it's missing a lot of parts, like the whole side right of the engine case, water pump, silencer, clutch lever, brake lever, shift lever, and the rims/tires are not usable, among other things. The biggest issue right now with finding the right parts is that I don't know exactly what year it is, neither does the guy who gave it to me. From my research so far looking at different microfiche, it appears to me to be an '88. How can I tell for sure? On different parts of the case, 2VM......is stamped into it. Does that give any clues? Where can I go to look this info up?? Appreciate any help you all can give me and I'm sure I'll be on here with a bunch of other questions once the teardown/rebuild begins.

Okiewan,
I'm a newbie as well. Where can I get help in using this sight? i.e. not posting more then once. How to access areas that say I'm restricted Etc. I'm an old skin and my web skills are lacking. Is ther a tutorial or some such? Any and all help would be beneficial. Thanks

For the money you are going to spend on fixing that bike, you can find another that will need alot less work.New rims can cost anywhere from 5 to 900$,plus the motor work and pipe and silencer and case covers. For that kind of money you can find a bike from the 90's which is just fine.I live 45 miles north of you, good to have another socal rider on board.Check out the socal wrecking crew forum under the western chapters. :yeehaw:

Best place to start is in the"Forums Comments" section of the site, found here: http://www.dirtrider.net/forums3/forumdisplay.php?f=147 .

Welcome to the site jeeptrick4

Check out the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) thread for the answer to your questions and the What are Subscribers and SupportTeam Members? thread for information regarding what the benefits are for the various levels of membership.

Regarding you question about the bke, check out the General Bike Repair and CR / KX / RM / YZ (2-Stroke) Discussion forums for info. Not knowing more than I see in your post, I can't be much help on the cost of repairs, but would figure that the fact that you got it for free would be a clue.

Best of luck, whichever path you choose. Again, welcome to the site, and shout if you have any questions!
