Hey everyone, Im a newbie. Im from Cali (bay area). I used to ride dirt when I was younger, but ended up selling the bike. And havent ridden dirt for awhile. I have instead been riding street for about 4 years. But recently rode dirt and man I miss it. So in short I have decided to get back into the dirt riding. I plan on getting a 2000 or 2001 cr250 within a month. Been looking pretty hard, and have found a lot. I've talked to quite a few people about what to look for when purchasing a used bike and have got a lot of good info. Anything else anyone could add in helping find a good bike? Once again, I'd like to say hello to everyone and this looks like a good dirt bike forum for a lot of good info. So i apologize now for any newbie questions I might ask. I just want to learn a lot. Thanks again.

LOL! Don't worry every one here was one at one point in time or another. If you are dead set on a CR you may want to post your question in the CR,YZ, RM or KX forum. Let me be the second one to welcome you to DRN. You'll love it here. The great information, the heated debates, the hair pulling. . . Oops! I don't have much info for you myself (since I've been riding the same old CR for 18+ years now), but there are loads of folks on the boards here who are going to bend over backwards to make sure that you get what you want. Irish, this doesnt seem to be CR specific, go easy on the guy. I believe he is asking for general things like
Put bike on center stand and try to move around rear wheel sideways to check tightness of spokes and wheel bearings.
Lift slightly on rear wheel to check tightness of bushings, minimal movement in bushing is best, example- 1/4 inch of movement without the shock moving is bad or sloppy
Ask if the top or bottom end has been done recently or at all.
look at air filter to see if they clean it
look at the frame carefully to check for exesive worn paint or signs of cracking or welding.
Welcome and good luck finding that gem. Chances are good you will find a lightly used bike at a fair price.

Thanks guys for the info, and for taking it easy on me... I figured it was a general question so I put it in the general disscusions. Man, Im hoping a find a good bike soon, I got the itch BAD! Anyone else from the bay area (cali)? Man I want to go riding..........lol. thanks again guys for the help.
Welcome MK4x4, One thing yo want to check on late model CR's is the frame. See if they protected the frame where the plastic rubs. It's helpful to me to look for little details like that, it kinda gives me a clue as to how much the owner cared about the bike. Of course you also want to look for all the other things too, chain, sprockets, general wear, etc. Good luck in finding the perfect bike for you! :)
