Problems with a XR500

A friend of mine has a starting problem with his XR500.
With a new spark plug the bike starts after one kick even hot.
If he rides like 5 kilometers and stall the bike after It is real hard to start. If he puts in a new spark it starts right away. I mean the bike eats the spark plugs faster then I drink beer.

What can he do ? wrong jetting or should he try other plugs ?

I'm sure many of us would like to help, but help us help you by answering a few questions:

What's the plug look like?
Sure he's got a clean air filter?
What altitude are you riding?
Any smoke on start-up or when warm and riding?
How does he re-start it? (twist the throttle?)
Unusual oil consumption or oil at the tip of the exhaust?

warm or cold?
