R/C Trucks

I see quite a few of you have R/C Nitro cars. Maybe someone can help me make a choice? (The R/C bulletin boards that I've found are crappy and wouldn't be of much help.) I'm thinking of buying one of these Nitro 4x4 trucks. I hve my choices narrowed down to the Traxxas T-Maxx or the HPI Nitro RS4 MT Racer. Reasons I like each one:

HPI:
1) Comes unassembled - gives me something to do for the next while (This is supposed to be a hobby)
2) Lower chassis - more stability
3) I could race this (competitively) if I wanted to
4) Dosen't come with Radio or Motor - I can customize right away
5) Less bulky than the T-Maxx - Less prone to breakage

Traxxas
1) Can go more places than the HPI RS4
2) Comes RTR - I can use it the same day I buy it
3) Less expensive

Any opnions on which would be better based on the above points?

HPI, no question at all! Those things absolutely rip! The Traxxas ones are ok, but they are more entry level, and don't have as much upgradability. And I've raced R/C trucks for about 6 years, and upgradablility is very important. Everybody makes cool parts for HPI's, but not as many for Traxxas. And RTR's suck, you don't know how it works, or how it comes apart, etc... so if it breaks its a whole new learning process. I would go with HPI.

I agree, I want to know how it works and how to assemble/disassemble then I can upgrade and fix things more easily. I think I'm going to order an MT Racer today! Thanks for the reply atc3434`!:) :) :)

I really woldn't think you would have much problem figuring out how to fix the car if you bought a RTR.I was in your exact same spot 3 weeks ago.I went with the traxxis.First thing I did was put a 15cv in it,big bore shocks and a hi torq steering servo.With the two speed tranny this thing rips.Unlike the HPI the t-max has the size to go many places,plus a reverse.:D

Playing wtih your rc truck is fun but gets boring fast,for a challenge check out 1/10or1/8 scale racing,electric or nitro,Losi or associated,[they use to dominate,been about nine years since i last raced] its alot more involved than you would think,lots of fun. MY TWO CENTS Pete

The racing aspect is why I went with an HPI Nitro Mt Racer. It dosen't come with a motor so I can get a high end motor to start. Plus some upgrades are already done on this model (bearings instead of shims etc.) I also like the extra stability of the MT Racer as compared to the Traxxas, this would be necessary for racing.

I also figured if I don't like this so much or don't enjoy racing and want to off-road more I can sell it quite easily and get a T-Maxx.
