Rear Air Shock Absorber Problem

I have a 1986 kawasaki KX80. I have a problem. The rear air shock is horrible. I don't know if I should put air or nitrogen in it. If I need to put nitro in it then how much would it cost to fill it up at the dealer. I can get a shock for $50. Would it be cheaper then filling the old one with nitro............. People say I might need a nitro recharge (or something like that). Would that be cheaper at the dealer or should I just get the shock for $50. I'm really confused and don't want to buy the shock and then realize it would have been cheaper to fix the old one. Please help me!!!

I put air in my shock just to test it. I was quoted from 15 to 40 dollars for a nitrogen charge. Was able to talk my boss into buying a nitrogen set up for testing auto AC systems at the repair shop where i work. 150#s for my kx250. Check your manual. Don't leave air in that shock for very long.

Hi. When is the last time the shock was rebuilt? When is the last time it was charged with nitrogen? Ask yourself the same questions about the "$50 shock". I would guess that the shock could REALLY use a rebuild and fresh oil, plus nitrogen. They can't be run forever without maintenance. Unless you know the $50 shock has a fresh nitorogen charge on it, it may need nitrogen too. Even a brand new in the box 1986 KX80 shock will need a charge. I have heard people get quotes from free - $40 on nitrogen.

Sorry to not give you a honest answer that is inexpensive too, but that is usually how it goes on a 20 year old shock.
