Ride report CR 250 2005

I got to really see what she had to offer yesterday. I am a "A" level harescramble racer. My choice of weapon is the CR 250 have been racing those bikes for fifteen plus years. I have done all the nessesities like springs and worked on the jetting yesterday. I got it pretty crisp but it was real humid yesterday so it was still a little rich, but it was close enough.
The motor has a hit from h$ll that comes on pretty close to the bottom, which I like. I only had to clutch it if I was in the tight woods in a gear to high, but it came to life quick enough. When I got to the deep sand ( I mean deeeeep) you could tell it was a little low on power down low. I had to whine each gear out to stay on the pipe. Which once you know this isn't a big deal. I think I like the power ok, It reminds me a little of the 99 I had. Which I loved.
Handling on the other hand will take a little getting use to. It tracks nice and straight but the thing wanted to turn in on me in soft turns. I think I need to fine tune the sag and that should take care of itself. This is the first real ride I have had on it, since I broke it in. Forks and shock work real well together and felt balanced. It was just the front kept wanting to keep turning into the direction I was going.
It should be a holeshot king with the massive hit that it has. I can't wait until next weekend where I will be racing the WORCs event.

Thats so funny you keep talking about a "hit". The one I spent the day on, had a powerful midrange, but no hit. LOL, well at least compared to a 05 RM 250. I thought the CR had a real easy to ride motor. Did you fool with the jetting??, the one I rode was all stock.

The stock jetting on that bike was way to rich for my application. I leaned everything out guite a bit. pilot 32.5, leaner needle, 400 main.(85% humidity,78 degrees,sea lvl.) Like I said in the first post it was still a little rich.The needle needs some more attention. When I crack the throttle it toke a second for it to get in the meat of the power band then came on hard. Unlike the YZ I rode it comes on at the very bottom, but I didn't like the forks or shock at all. I almost bought a YZ. Calling it a hit may be the wrong terminology.

What exactly is a hit? (this is a legit question - I am not trying to be difficult) My 02 supposedly has no "hit" but I have no doubt that something happens at about 30-50% rpms when the power comes on and front wheel is in the air all of a sudden. If that's not a "hit", then what am I looking for?

I have to say that if this burst of power is not a "hit" and RM250s have more of something that makes it a "hit", I don't think I want one.

LOL- its not that bad. infact the Rm is quite an easy to use engine.

That bike had some serious power...Back in 93' I rode a friends CR250 both before and after he had it ported (I think Eric Gorr did it)...That bike could roar out of tight 180 degree turns in 3rd gear with no clutch..It was fast stock and even faster modified...Not to mention that it felt like an RM 250 in the turns...

I had a 93 that was one of the sweetest bikes I have ever owned. The 99 was my next favorite. The 90, 95, and 01 were fair in comparison. It is to early to tell about the 05 yet.

The best thing I ever did to it was put a set of 46mm KYB RSU forks from an 89 KX500 on it.
It went from an evil headshaking, deflecting, nervous front end to acting like it had a steering damper and works forks on it. Truly amazing how it changed the bike.

I had a 93 cr250 and it had "hit" I have ridden an 03 rm 250 and it had decent "hit" my 97 cr250 has "hit" now. The big diffrence between all of the bikes is the Hit on the 93 was sudden and it pulled. the rm was a similar feeling. the 97 cr had a smooth all around powerband.

I don't think there is a motocrosser made that doesn't have a "hit."

Yeah, some are harder than others, but they certainly don't run like an RT180. Now that lacks a hit for sure!

My 95 CR250 that Eric Gorr ported for me had no discernible "hit". It came on just above idle and was smooth and linear throughout. You could flattrack corners with it like a thumper.

My 03 CR250 also has a very linear and smooth power delivery.

I do .... but come to think of it, I've never taken the 93 up there.

wow- liked the tuning tips for the yz125- it seems the best option is to take the 125 engine out and replace it with a 250, LOL.

joking aside, some seriously cool stuff there. That RM125 case error looked a bit bad.

I think mine had that but the base gasket coped with the variation-ive not heard of one 04 rm125 blowing up due to airleaks.

i recently purchased an 05 cr 250 as well..... im still getting the jetting dialed in on the fatty pipe ( i crushed the stocker like a soda can :( ) i will be racing motocross on it in the next few months so i will see how it does..... over all fun bike to ride....

Hey Marcus great find.:) I would think the cylinder had to modified other than the 12mm gap from the looks of the dyno chart. That is such any easy fix for all that power.

You won't know what a hit is until you have ridden a mid eighties CR500. The hit is instant right off the bottom and if you are weak you will either have your arms pulled off at the shoulder or simply crash into a tree. Scary power. The later CR500's don't seem to have that kind of explosion.

cant see why..... the basic bike is the same as a 04 etc and we heard nothing on those?
