You need a cylinder, exhaust valves, and piston. You're looking at around 500-600 for those parts unless you can find them used. All the pieces for the exhaust valves are really going to add up. You can get that all back together and running in about 2 hours easily if you get those parts. You should go out to www.bikebandit.com and look at the parts diagrams for OEM parts for that bike. That'll tell you all the gaskets you'll need also. I'm guessing you'll need a cylinder gasket and head o-rings.

Buy a manual, it will help you alot. the 10th digit of the VIN tells you what year you have.

1986 = "G"
1987 = "H"
1988 = "J"
1989 = "K"

Go to online parts stores and price the parts.

Eric might have what you need.

You will want to rebuild the bottom end on a bike that old too. If it's too mechanically advanced for you, pay a mechanic to rebuild it for you.

Good luck, Steve.

thanks steve... would it be cheaper to buy a complete engine? i have two engines for the bike but there both in the same state i.e same parts missing...

Fultoncm said that it will cost me about 500-600 to get the parts... then i'll have to rebuild the bottom end? or pay someone...

Im thinking if its worth buyin a new engine...

or just selling the bike...

I can see in the first pic it has a rear disc brake first year for that was '88 model, the 87-88 motors are basically the same. Pretty much none of the 86 parts will work cept maybe some of the plastic's stayed the same and definetly none of the parts from an '89 will work it was a totally new bike in '89.

I would look on like e - bay for the parts for used stuff

Cal Eric and ask what he would charge to do the whole engine. He may be able to get you up and running for less than you think. He may have a used but serviceable cylinder. You won't know until you ask. He is a very knowlgeable and helpful. He has built two of my engines and will be doing my third as well.

I was off on that price. New parts are gonna cost you around a grand. I didn't realize that cylinder was almost $500. Check out this link:

You can't even get the head OEM, it's discontinued. And you'll need everything on this page for the exhaust:

You'd be better off getting a complete engine or getting a complete top-end from an auction or parts bike.
