Safety Wire Grips

I bought a pound of safety wire that is suppossed to arrive on Monday. So how do I put this wire on? I don't have safety wire pliers, so how hard is it to do with just needle know pliers and wire cutters? Also, are there any other uses for this wire? Any other necessities? Thanks a lot. You've already been helpful.

Needle nose vicegrips wil work in a pinch, I had a grip loosen on a ride this year and managed to get it safety wired on tight with a pair of cheap cumbersome pliers.
