Safety Wire or Glue

Ok, what exactly is saftey wire? And how does it keep a grip on?

I put one layer of electrical tape on the left bar end (seems to work better for me than glue) than just put a nickle in the ends, spray some contact cleaner in the grips. Put them on, safty wire them, go ride, crash, come back, and do it all over again.
