"SAN FRANCISCO (February 7, 2004) - Yamaha's Chad Reed, of Dade City, Fla., won his fourth THQ World Supercross GP/THQ AMA Supercross Series race at SBC Park in front of 39,621 fans. Honda's Nathan Ramsey, of Menifee, Calif., won his first THQ AMA Supercross Series 125cc Eastern Regional race, breaking Kawasaki rider Ivan Tedesco's five-race win streak.

Kawasaki's Michael Byrne, of Temecula, Calif., earned the $1,500 Butterfinger Holeshot Award. Reed and rival Kevin Windham entered the first turn in the middle of the pack, while Byrne tangled with Langston on lap 2 and went down. Windham, of Centerville, Miss., crashed in the whoops and remounted in last place. Reed moved into the lead by lap four and held on for the remaining 16 laps. Reed's teammate, David Vuillemin, of Murrieta, Calif., passed Honda's Mike LaRocco late in the race to take over second place.

“It feels great to get back here in the number-one position,” said Reed. “I had a bad start and had to be patient to get to the front.”

Tedesco, who won his heat race earlier in the evening by a wheel, earned the $1,000 Butterfinger Holeshot Award with Nathan Ramsey, Brock Sellards and Travis Preston following. Preston, of Hesperia, Calif., passed Sellards on lap four and took over third place. On lap 12 of 15, Ramsey made his move around Tedesco after battling with him for most of lap 11.

“I have been trying all season and still have plenty of confidence, but tonight it paid off,” said Ramsey. “I hope that I can continue to ride up front for the rest of the season.”

“I had the flu last night, so I came into tonight's race a little tired,” said Tedesco. “Around lap 10, I started to really winded.” "

Listening to it on the net last night it sounded like we were getting set for an epic battle between Reed and Windham, then Windham wadded it up in the whoops and had to come back from dead last. I can't wait to watch the 125's it sounded like a killer battle!

I'm surprised Windham went down in the whoops. As far as I'm concerned, he's not only done basically a *perfect* job adapting that 450 to the whoops, but he's the best whoops rider right now. Quite a bit better than Reed. I guess all it takes is a temporary lapse...

Just as in every other type of racing, it seems the 450 has advantages in the whoops (momentum/mass where it's needed), yet forward weight; hence the need for him to carry the front wheel. We'll see today if he let it down.

Better dirt, better Suzuki result?

LaRocco's getting better each race. He looked terrible out of the gate (this season), but I'm betting he'll win (or come really close) sometime this year. Give him a good day when the hemorrhoids, low backpain and that chronic cough aren't just killing him and he'll smoke those young punks. :aj:

The 125 Main event was the best race of the night. This was my first SX event and I had a great time! I had an excellent view of the whoops. You know what I thought was cool too was the Youth KTM race, announcer asked the second place finisher if he'd rather have a new bike or a girlfriend and he said "girlfriend" lol!!!! Kid must have been nervous.

Just saw the 250 main on TV. Yawn. Good racing for 2nd to 5th places, but overall a snoozefest.

I had a blast! I think the racing this year was closer in both classes, in the 125 the race was for the win and in the 250 the race for 2-4 was pretty tight. Too bad Windham crashed, after seeing him and Reed both check out in their heat races I was looking forward to seeing them duel.

Misc observations:
-Damn the 125 class IS loud now
-I got seats around row 15, way too low to see all the track. Next year we'll try upstairs.
-Some of the privateer bikes sounded like they were running very rough through the first rhythm section, either very rich or ??. There were some odd sounds coming out of some of those bikes!
-Very nice to see a BRC ad played during the show, wish they'd show it more!
-We didnt have to endure that awful country song before the anthem, woohoo! ;)
-I could do without the music as the races start, I love the sound of the bikes getting ready to go, and at least from our seats they were drowned out by the tunes.

Well it sounds like Langston got docked points for the contact with Byrne. I have never been a fan of the AMA, but the new boss monkey is making Finch look like a genius. Good work AMA where do I send my check.

Man, if that's true, that is complete BS! That was about as incidental as contact gets on the track, IMO.

I haven't seen the race but maybe Steve Whitelock needs to be fined and get a good drumming for his decision making so far this season....he hasn't quite got his head around it yet. I haven't agreed with him yet.

But what I thought was interesting was Nick Wey in 4th. I remember some on this site rubbishing him badly and saying he didn't deserve a factory ride. I dunno....I always liked the man and kudo's to him for a top 5 ride.

Yeah what ever happened to that guy? Fad Reed was another one of his favorites, he is not really championship material. I don't see how you can not like a guy like Wey, lost his ride but never gave up and busted his ass to get back into the big rig's.

If Langston got a point deduction, the AMA has run SX into the ground.

Anybody hear what happenend too Yogi?? Saw him go over the bars in the whoops, and that was it for the night.. It is nice too see Kawi have a 250 rider that seems "Hungry" I dont think Langston deserves a point deduction.. Last 2 races i've been too, saw RC's outdoor streak broke and saw a CRF250R get its first big win :thumb:

Super rat; where did you get that? I have spent the last hour looking around the web and can't find any reference at all.

Jon K, check Cyclenews.com.

I was there. Windham went into the whoops WAY too hot! I think he got a little impatient. LaRocco got a great start,4th, but took forever to get by Langston, who was riding very well. In the meantime DV came out of nowhere and was the fastest guy on the track at the end, taking about 1.5 seconds per lap out of Reed. I was sad that LaRocco got passed and Windham crashed. LaRocco & Tyler Evans almost came to blows after their heat race. Evans made a very aggresive pass on LaRocco, way more contact than Langston on Byrne. Afterwards, Mike tracked down Evans and got in his face. I could hear then yelling at eachother, but I couldn't understand what they were saying. I had a great view of the incident, and it looked like Evans used some elbow and rode Mike up high in the turn. There was definately contact. No fine for that I guess? The lagston thing looked way worse than it was. The replay showed No contact imo. This Whitelock might be getting out of hand.
The 250f main was great. If you own a 125 2 stroke, don't even bother showing up. Ramsey was relentless, and it was good to see him come back from the leg injury. I wish that race went on even longer.

Man, if we would have had 5 more laps in the 250 main I think it could have been really interesting. DV and the Rock were battling pretty hard for 2nd. I don't know if Reed let up a little or if DV and the Rock were just flying. Probably a combination of the two. I was really surprised to see how much space DV closed on Reed in just a matter of a few laps.

That point-docking thing has gotten outta control. Sometimes you just gotta let the boys settle things in the ring. From the replay, and from what the announcers said, looked like Byrne hit the tuff block and went down? Looked to me like he may have even driven himself into Langston. What a bunch of crap.

With DV's 2nd place at San Fran, he's now ahead of KW by 2 points to take 2nd in the points ranking (although this would not be the case if KW wasn't deducted 10 points previously).

I wonder what the Langston point docking means for the KW/Honda appeal. Thats due on 10 Feb.....thats tomorrow my time. Even as a Reed fan Im totally not in favour of a point docking penalty. Doesn't look good for them.. lets hope some sanity prevails.

Via cyclenews.com:
Langston insists that on the tape from ESPN and from KTM’s own cameras, they “almost didn’t touch at all.”
It's funny how we all think that racing is racing and bumping happens... so do the ones that come out the benefactor of bumping. See Grant defend his riding in this instance but declare war on JBS last year when bubba took him out. Vulliman got PO'd at KW but KW said it was racing... Byrne is PO'd at Grant but grant says they barely touched....

Until the guy that goes down steps up and says "AMA, you're on crack, that was just racing..." this situation is not going to gt any better. But most of these guys, Grant, Byrne, DV.... want the free ticket and will therefore complain about it and call it dirty riding but say it is just racing when they are not the ones picking their bikes up.
