Chad Reed grabs the win and points lead

By: Garry Morrow

Sunday, 19th February, 2006 - - 619 Reads -

Yamaha's Chad Reed has bounced back to the top step of he podium and the points race at round seven of the AMA Amp'd Mobile Supercross Series after an action packed main event saw his main rivals, James Stewart and Ricky Carmichael go by the way side at the Edward Jones Dome - St. Louis, Missouri. Factory Honda's Davey Millsaps took the opening round win in the Supercross Lites East Series.

"I knew that I could do it, I never gave up on that. I just went in knowing I knew I could do it," said a relived Reed.

Reed's maiden victory for the series looked like it was highly unlikely before the gate dropped on the 20 lap main. Struggling to cope with a tricky rhythm section, that he did not conquer until the seventh lap of the main and scraping through his heat after crashing in the whoops most commentators where speculating as to what was wrong with the former champion.

As the gate dropped the first big surprise came when Makita Suzuki's Ricky Carmichael bit the dust. Remounting in 19th place the points leader then cased a triple and blew his shock out and was back in the pits before the end of lap one. It was a culmination of a dirty night for four time supercross champion after he crashed in his heat and had to qualify through the semi final.

Back on the track Carmichael's team-mate Ivan Tedesco quickly overcame holeshot winner Jacob Sailor and held the lead for the opening two laps with Honda's Ernesto Fonseca right behind.

Reed was on the pace but still struggling with the rhythm section back in third with James Stewart right behind him. Stewart was not making any headway into Reed, Fonseca or Tedesco although he was showing a wheel to Reed on occasion.

Reed then made his way past Fonseca with a little bit of resistance and then set about chasing down Tedesco for the lead. After a small skirmish Reed hit the lead and set about gapping the field.

Stewart was making small headway but his race came to a dramatic change when he had a simple crash. His major opportunity to capitalise on Carmichael's misfortune evaporated as he sat trackside trying to fire the Kawasaki KX450F into life - he would be 19th and one lap down by the time he got going and would never be a factor for the rest of the night, eventually being classed as 17th in the end.

With the two main title contenders effectively out of the race Reed made the most of the chance and headed to his first victory of the season. With Stewart and Carmichael only able to harvest 4 and 1 point respectively Reed stood on the podium with a ten point lead in the championship and a very relieved smile.

"Today I was horrible, there is no better word for it" said Reed after the race. "I’ve had my head in my butt the whole season. I needed this as a confidence booster to give all those fools on internet something to talk about this week. Our whole team worked hard and I have to thank them for being patient."

Kawasaki's Chris Gosselaar won the Progressive Direct Holeshot Award in the AMA Supercross Lites main event. KTM's Josh Hansen hen jumped out to an early lead while Davey Millsap began his charge through pack after a seventh place start.

Hansen held the lead until the beginning of lap nine when Millsaps made the move into the lead. Millsaps led next six laps en route to his third career win. Gosselaar was second and Yamaha’s Branden Jesseman was third.

"Unfortunately I wasn't up front at the start, but I was able to get around traffic early," said Millsaps. "I saw that the top guys were up front and I knew I had to pass them to get into the lead. It didn’t take me long to get used to my new bike and I guess I got it off to a good start." said Millsaps.

Round 8 of the series takes place next weekend (Feb-25) at Atlanta.

I sat there in section 136, hoping for a really good race, and in the first turn, theres goes RC, he;s out. I got up and started to walk out, and we kept on watching, because stewart was fighting for third place, then, I thing it was aroung lap 9, he has his mishap. for us, ther race was over. WE all already knew who was going to take it. we were VERY disapointed.............................
we'll watch it at 12:30 TODAY just to get mad again........................................

Insanity I tell ya!
Not sure why you got mad gnarly? This is by FAR the most unpredictiable season in MANY years. We wanted a tight points race, we got one.

And Chad? A lot of his comments would have you believe he beat the other two straight-up / head-to-head (speed vs speed) ? No doubt about it, he won, a win is a win, but :
"I knew that I could do it, I never gave up on that. I just went in knowing I knew I could do it," said a relived Reed.
?? I think pretty much everyone on the planet knows Reed will likely win if the top two aren't running? Problem is...the odds of this happening again (RC and JS out) are slim.

I needed this as a confidence booster to give all those fools on internet something to talk about this week.
LOL!

Can't wait to see it on TV. Things sure can change in hurry. RC and JBS are in a big hole now - if either of them wins the title it will be hard earned. And the pressure is really on Chad now. This season is going to be a fight to the finish! I'm loving it.

RC had a huge lead in his heat race and I think he put down a 50.2 lap, which I believe was better than Bubba's or Chad's best of the night. And RC had the best practice lap. Sounded like RC was doing awesome before his heat race crash.

After wadding it badly with a huge heat race lead, RC was interviewed and said he hurt his neck but would be all right. He then won his Semi by a huge margin of over 20 seconds. Not bad in a 6 lap race with 51 second laps. When he pulled off in the main I figured he tweaked his neck he was not taking chances. Glad to hear his DNF was mechanical instead of physical.

And so ends RC's streak of 37 straight SX starts with a podium finish. He got 15 straight to end '03, sat out '04, had 16 straight podiums in '05 and 6 in '06. That's 37 podiums in a row. Amazing.

CR was handed a gift, he'll lose the points lead in 4 races unless he figures something out. He was a full 2 seconds slower in practice. I do hope he finds his legs in the second half though to make it interesting.

RC's heat crash was scary, he is really lucky he didn't get hurt in that one. He was trying a new line through the whoops and entered them by jumping in further than anyone all night. I want to see it on TV, but it appeared he went straight over the bars with the bike smacking him in the back.

In the other heat I hope they show the move Tedesco put on Reed and how much faster he was. Afterwards, Reed pulled over to the straight where he was losing the most time and sat there for a couple minutes trying to figure out what he was doing wrong.

Reed may need this for confidence, but he hasn't stepped anything up. He is still a distant 3rd to RC and Bubba's speed and if Tedesco keeps improving he is going to find himself in a fight for 3rd on the podium.

Does anybody know why Stewart was only running half speed after he got the pig started again? I see Brown was still running the 2-stroke, I bet JS was wishing that he was  The anouncers said something about the 4's getting the magic button put on them or some talk about it. Does anyone know anything about that?
I almost turned it off after RC exited thru the tunnel, thinking he was injured and may have just started his last SX race :yikes: Glad I kept listening tho. :aj:

I just noticed Tony's results post lists Brown on the 450. The webcast announcers :coocoo: said he was on the 250. Which is it?

i read a report from someone that was there. they said that brown was on a two-stroke.

Not the best coverage by CBS but I'm just glad they are showing it next day. This is the best season we've had in several years!!

I just watched the race on TV, I can absolutely not believe it. If anyone had been able to hold on to win it I wish Tedesco had, I just do not like Reed very much.

My wife pretty much summed it up when she said something like why doesen't he wait until he beats somebody before he gets to congratulatory. A win is a win but RC and Bubba beat themselves. Kind of reminiscent of a certain championship when a certain racer was out w/injury.............

I've got tix for Indy in 2 weeks - this is the best thing that could have happened for me . . . even though I'd like to see RC the championship again.

Did anybody see what caused Bubba to crash - watching it on T.V. it looked like he might have hit a bale laying in the track or a boulder . . . LOL Couldn't tell from the camera angle.

Watching Bubba try to get that 4 stroke started was a particularly nice moment for me . . . :nener:

Best season ever, just keeps you guessing who is gonna win it,would have been more interesting if KW was in the mix though. I doubt Reed is gonna win it though, because Tedesco has already served him notice. Ricky needs to win 4 races(which is very possible) with Reed getting 2nd(which is somehow impossible with hungry Bubba and Tedesco on his tail and Fonseca in the back) and takeover from Reed. Bubba needs to win 6 races with Reed getting 2nd to take over. So all the pressure is on Reed, from now on with 9 rounds to go Reed cannot afford 3rd, he has to get 2nd or better or pray that both Ricky and Bubba crash out /DNF /DNS at least twice and figure out how to get Tedesco out of his head, then he wins the championiship. That's my opinion though, anyone can challenge or second it. Also to add on i think Reed was lucky to get out of this one the way he was riding, but a WIN is a WIN, all credit should go to Tedesco he rode a great race and proved to Reed and the racing world that he is a podium guy not just a rider.
